Chapter 97

1 The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

*God rules, so the world celebrates; let all the many islands be happy about it.

2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

*Surrounding him are clouds and darkness, while righteousness and fairness make up his royal home.

3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.

*A fire is ahead of him, burning his opponents all around.

4 His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

*His lightning made the world bright: the land saw and shook.

5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

*The mountains seemed like melting wax when God was near, with God, the ruler of all the land.

6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

*The sky shows how fair he is, and everyone sees his greatness.

7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

*Cursed are those who worship statues and brag about their idols; all you gods, worship Him.

8 Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.

*Zion listened and felt happy; the women of Judah celebrated because of your decisions, Lord.

9 For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.

*You, Lord, are higher than everything on Earth; you are greatly raised above all other gods.

10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

*If you love the Lord, dislike wrongdoing. He protects those who are good and saves them from bad people.

11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

*Light is given to those who do good, and happiness to those with honest hearts.

12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

*Be happy for God, good people! And say thank you when you remember how holy he is.
