Each letter in the alphabet is assigned a numerical value. Depending on the system, these values differ, and the final value of a word or phrase is the sum of all the individual letters’ numerical values. Different traditions and systems assign these numbers differently, which can lead to varying results depending on the system you use.
Gematria Systems
Standard Gematria
How it works: Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number from 1 to 9 repeatedly, with A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, and so on until I = 9, then starting again at J = 1.
Example: The word “HELLO” is calculated as H = 8, E = 5, L = 3, L = 3, O = 6, so “HELLO” = 8 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 6 = 25.
Simple Gematria
How it works: Similar to Standard Gematria, but the numbering is linear from A = 1 to Z = 26.
Example: The word “HELLO” is calculated as H = 8, E = 5, L = 12, L = 12, O = 15, so “HELLO” = 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52.
Hebrew Gematria
How it works: Hebrew Gematria uses the values of the Hebrew alphabet, where letters are assigned numbers based on traditional kabbalistic interpretations. For example, Aleph = 1, Bet = 2, Gimel = 3, and so on.
