1
O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again.
*Dear God, you have rejected us, you have scattered us, you are unhappy with us; please come back to us again.
2
Thou hast made the earth to tremble; thou hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.
*You have caused the earth to quake and break; fix its cracks, as it continues to shake.
3
Thou hast shewed thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.
*You have shown your people difficult things: you have made us drink the wine of amazement.
4
Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
*You have given a flag to those who fear you, so it can be shown for the truth. Pause and reflect.
5
That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand, and hear me.
*Please your loved one by saving them with your mighty hand, and pay attention to my request.
6
God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.
*God has spoken in his purity; I will be happy, I will split Shechem, and measure the land of Succoth.
7
Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;
*Gilead and Manasseh belong to me, and Ephraim is my strong helper. Judah is my rule-maker.
8
Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of me.
*Moab is like my cleaning bowl; I'll throw my sandal away in Edom; Philistia, celebrate because of me.
9
Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?
*Who will guide me to the fortified city? Who will take me to Edom?
10
Wilt not thou, O God, which hadst cast us off? and thou, O God, which didst not go out with our armies?
*Will you, God, not accept us anymore? And why didn't you, God, join our soldiers in battle?
11
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
*Please us with difficulty help: since human aid is useless.
12
Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.
*With God's help, we will be brave. He will defeat our enemies for us.
