1
Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.
*Don't stay quiet, God: don't be silent and don't stop acting, God.
2
For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.
*"See, your enemies are causing a commotion, and those who don't like you are lifting their heads proudly."
3
They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.
*They have cleverly planned to deceive your people and also discussed secret strategies against your special group.
4
They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
*They said, "Let's stop their country from existing so people won't remember Israel's name anymore."
5
For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:
*They all agreed together to work as a team against you.
6
The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;
*The tents of Edom and the descendants of Ishmael; from Moab and the descendants of Hagar.
7
Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
*Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines and people of Tyre;
8
Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
*Assur has joined with them, helping the children of Lot. Selah.
9
Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:
*Treat them just like the Midianites; think of it like how you would treat Sisera and Jabin at the Kison river.
10
Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth.
*Which died at Endor: they turned into garbage for the ground.
11
Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:
*Make their important people like Oreb and like Zeeb; yes, all their leaders like Zebah and like Zalmunna.
12
Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession.
*Someone said, "Let's grab control of God's houses for ourselves."
13
O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.
*Oh God, please make them spin away like trash in the wind.
14
As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;
*As a fire burns wood, and flames set mountains ablaze.
15
So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.
*So, upset them with your big windstorm and scare them with your powerful storm.
16
Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD.
*Make them feel embarrassed; so they look for your name, God.
17
Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:
*Let them always be confused and disturbed; yes, let them feel embarrassed and disappear.
18
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
*So that people can understand you are Jehovah, the only name above everything on Earth, rule over us all.
