Back to Chapters
1
O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me:
*Dear Lord, I believe in you; protect me from those who hurt me and keep me safe.
2
Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
*So that the lion doesn't rip open my soul, tearing it apart with no one to save me.
3
O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
*Dear Lord, if I did this; if I have wrongdoing in my actions;
4
If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)
*If I punished someone who was friendly to me; (yes, I also handed over someone who didn't deserve it and was my enemy.)
5
Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.
*Let those against me chase and capture me, even if they crush my life on this earth and put my reputation in the dirt. Stop and think about that.
6
Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.
*Rise up, God, in anger, act due to my enemies' fury: and awaken to execute the judgment you decreed.
7
So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return thou on high.
*So, the group of people will surround you; because of them, go back up to a higher place.
8
The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.
*The Lord will judge everyone: judge me, God, based on my goodness and honesty, which are within me.
9
Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
*Stop the bad things that bad people do; help those who are fair instead. The fair God checks what people really think and feel inside.
10
My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.
*My protection comes from God, who saves those with honest hearts.
11
God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
*God evaluates the good people, and God is upset with the bad people every day.
12
If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.
*If he doesn't change, he will sharpen his sword; he has prepared his bow and is ready to use it.
13
He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors.
*He has also ready the tools to kill; he plans his arrows for those who harm others.
14
Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.
*Look, he is involved in wrongdoing, has planned trouble, and has given birth to lies.
15
He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.
*He dug a hole, made it deeper, and then fell into the hole he created.
16
His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.
*His trouble will come back to him, and his violent actions will hurt him.
17
I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.
*I will honor God based on his fairness, and I will sing about God's great name.
