1
Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
*Save me, Lord, from the bad person: protect me from the aggressive one.
2
Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
*Which think of troubles in their hearts; they always gather together to fight.
3
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
*They have made their words sharp like a snake; they have venom on their lips. Stop and think about that.
4
Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
*Please keep me away from bad people, Lord. Protect me from those who are aggressive and want to ruin my plans.
5
The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
*People who think they're better have hidden a trap for me, with ropes. They put a net near the road for me to get caught in. They've also prepared traps for me. Selah.
6
I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.
*I told God, "You are my God. Listen to my prayers, please."
7
O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
*Dear God, you are my protector and savior. In the heat of the fight, you have shielded me, keeping me safe.
8
Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
*Don't let, Lord, the bad people have what they want. Don't help them with their evil plans. Or else they will think they are better than they are. Pause.
9
As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
*In other words, let the trouble caused by the people around me come back to them because of what they say.
10
Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
*Let hot embers fall on them; throw them into the fire, in deep holes so they don't come back up.
11
Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
*Don't let a bad talker become powerful on Earth: evil will try to get rid of the violent person to defeat them.
12
I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
*I understand that God will support those who are mistreated and ensure justice for the needy.
13
Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.
*Of course, those who do good will thank your name; the honest ones will live with you.
