Chapter 124

1 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

*If the LORD hadn't been with us, Israel wouldn't have been able to say...

2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

*If the LORD hadn't been with us when people fought against us,

3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

*Then they tried to quickly defeat us when they were very angry.

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

*Then the water rose too much, it covered our emotions completely.

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

*Then, the arrogant water covered our hearts.

6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

*Praised is the Lord, who has kept us safe from danger.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

*Our soul has safely gotten away like a bird from a trap made by hunters: now the trap is broken, and we have been set free.

8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

*Our help comes from the LORD, the one who created the sky and the ground.
