1
Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
*Listen up, everyone; pay attention, all those living on Earth.
2
Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
*All people, whether they have little or much, should be together.
3
My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
*My mouth will share wise words, and my heart's thoughts will make sense.
4
I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
*I will listen to a story: I will share my hidden meaning through music on a stringed instrument.
5
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
*Why should I be afraid during bad times, when the wrongdoing around me will surround me?
6
They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
*Those who rely on their wealth and brag about their great amount of possessions.
7
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
*None of them can, in any way, save their brother or pay God a ransom for him.
8
(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
*Their soul's rescue is extremely valuable, and it lasts forever.
9
That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
*So that he could keep living forever without decaying.
10
For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
*Wise people, fools, and cruel individuals all eventually die, leaving their possessions behind for others.
11
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
*They believe their homes will last forever, passed down through all future generations. They name their land after themselves.
12
Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
*Even though people may have honor, they don't stay that way forever; they are like animals that eventually die.
13
This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
*This is their mistake: still, their future generations agree with their words. Take a break.
14
Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
*Just like sheep, they are put to rest in the grave. Death will take care of them. In the morning, righteous people will rule over them. Their beauty will fade away in the grave where they live.
15
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
*But God will save my life from death's control: for He will accept me. Pause.
16
Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
*Don't be scared when someone becomes wealthy, and their house's splendor grows.
17
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
*When someone dies, they can't take anything with them. Their glory won't follow them either.
18
Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
*Even though he was blessed while alive, people will only truly praise you when you take care of yourself.
19
He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
*He will return to his ancestors' time; they won't experience any light.
20
Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
*A person with high status but lacks understanding is like animals that die.
