Chapter 12

1 Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

*Help, God; because good people are disappearing; as loyal people are running out among humans.

2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

*They talk about nothing important to their neighbors, using sweet words but having a dishonest mind.

3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

*The Lord will stop all deceitful speech and the tongue that boasts arrogantly.

4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

*Who say, "We will win using our words." Our lips belong to us. Who is our boss?

5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

*For hurting the poor and making the needy sad, God says he will act now to protect them from their oppressor.

6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

*The Lord's words are completely clean: like silver tested in a fire on Earth, made pure seven times over.

7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

*You will protect them, Lord; you will save them from this generation forever.

8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

*Bad people are all around, and really bad ones get lifted up.
