Chapter 85

1 Lord, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.

*Lord, you have been kind to your land: you have returned the captured people of Jacob.

2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.

*You have forgiven your people's wrongdoing; you have covered all their sins. Pause and reflect.

3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.

*You have removed all your anger: you have stopped being fierce in your rage.

4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.

*Turn us, God of our rescue, and stop being angry at us.

5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?

*Will you be angry with us forever? Will you extend your anger to all future generations?

6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

*Will you not bring us back to life again, so that your people can be happy because of you?

7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.

*Please show us your kindness, God, and give us your saving help.

8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

*I will listen to what God, the Lord, has to say because He will bring peace to His people and saints. But they must not return to foolishness.

9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.

*His rescue is close to those who respect him; so glory can live in our country.

10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

*Mercy and truth come together; righteousness and peace give each other a kiss.

11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

*Truth will come from the ground, and fairness will come from above.

12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.

*Yes, the Lord will provide what is good, and our land will produce an abundance.

13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

*Righteousness will come first, showing us the path to follow in his footsteps.
