Chapter 64

1 Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

*Listen to my voice, God, in my prayer: protect me from being scared by the enemy.

2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:

*Keep me away from the hidden plans of bad people; from the rebellion of those who do wrong things.

3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

*Who sharpen their tongue like a weapon and prepare their bow to shoot sharp words, which are very unkind.

4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

*So they can secretly aim for the perfect person, then suddenly they attack without fear.

5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?

*They motivate themselves for bad actions: they discuss secretly setting traps; they ask, Who will notice them?

6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

*They look for wrongdoings very carefully. They do this thoroughly. They examine not only what people think on the inside but also their hearts, which are very deep.

7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.

*But God will surprise them with an arrow, causing them to be hurt quickly.

8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

*So, they will cause their language to be unintelligible to themselves, and everyone who sees them will run away.

9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

*And everyone will be afraid and tell others about what God has done, because they will think carefully about his actions.

10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

*Good people will be happy because of God and believe in Him. Those with honest hearts will feel proud.
