1
I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
*I called out to God loudly, and God listened to me.
2
In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
*When I faced difficulties, I turned to God for help. My pain continued through the night and wouldn't stop; my heart was too sad to find any peace.
3
I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
*I thought of God and became worried. I grumbled, and my soul felt too heavy. Stop and think about that.
4
Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
*You wake up my eyes: I'm so confused I can't talk.
5
I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
*I thought about the past days, the years long ago.
6
I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
*I remember my nighttime song: I talk to my own heart: and my spirit searches carefully.
7
Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
*Will the Lord never help again? And will he stop being kind?
8
Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
*Has his kindness ended forever? Does his promise no longer hold true?
9
Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
*Has God forgotten to be kind? Has he closed his gentle mercies out of anger? (Selah)
10
And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
*I said, "This is my weakness," but I will remember the many good years of the great God's powerful help.
11
I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
*I will remember all the good things the LORD has done: I will definitely remember the amazing things you did long ago.
12
I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
*I will think about everything you've done and discuss your actions.
13
Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
*Your path, God, is in the holy place; who is as great as our God?
14
Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
*You are the powerful God who does amazing things; you have shown your strength to the people.
15
Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
*You have saved your people with your power, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Pause and reflect.
16
The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
*The waters saw you, God, and were scared. The deep waters got disturbed too.
17
The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
*The clouds released water; the sky made a noise; your arrows were sent out too.
18
The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.
*Your thunder's sound was heard in the sky, lightning brightened everything on Earth, and the ground shook and quivered.
19
Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
*Your path is through the ocean, and your journey involves big waters, and no one knows your footprints.
20
Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
*You guided your people, like a group of sheep, with Moses and Aaron leading the way.
