1 In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.

*When I was in trouble, I called out to God, and he listened to me.

2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

*Save me, Lord, from false words and tricky speech.

3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

*What will you receive, or what will happen to you, you lying tongue?

4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

*Strong people's sharp arrowheads, made from juniper wood embers.

5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!

*Oh, how unfortunate I am, living in Mesech and staying in the tents of Kedar.

6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.

*My soul has lived for a long time with someone who hates peace.

7 I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

*I want peace, but when I talk, they choose fighting.
