1
Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.
*Listen, Israel's shepherd, you who guides Joseph like a group of sheep; you living among cherubim, brighten up.
2
Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.
*Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh use your power to help us, please come and save us.
3
Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
*Turn us back, God, and make your light shine on us; then we will be safe.
4
O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?
*Dear Lord, God of many armies, for how much longer will you be upset with your people's prayers?
5
Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure.
*You give them food that is made of tears, and make them drink a lot of tears.
6
Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.
*You cause conflicts with our neighbors, and our enemies laugh at us.
7
Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
*Turn us back, God of armies, and make your light shine on us; then we will be safe.
8
Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
*You have taken a vine from Egypt; you have removed the non-believers and planted it.
9
Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land.
*You made a place for it first, and then helped it grow deep roots, until it completely filled the land.
10
The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
*The hills had its shadow and its branches looked like beautiful cedar trees.
11
She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.
*She reached out over the sea with her branches and extended into the river.
12
Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
*Why did you destroy her boundaries, making it easy for passersby to pick her fruits?
13
The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.
*The wild pig from the forest destroys the area, and the wild animal from the field eats it up.
14
Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine;
*Please come back, God of armies, watch from heaven, see and care for this grapevine.
15
And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
*And the vineyard your right hand planted, and the strong branch you made for yourself.
16
It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
*It gets destroyed by fire, gets chopped down; they vanish when you disapprove with your look.
17
Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
*Put your hand on the person you favor, on the strong person you made for yourself.
18
So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
*We won't leave you; make us alive, and we will pray to your name.
19
Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
*Turn us back, Lord Almighty, make your light shine on us; then we will be safe.
