Chapter 58

1 Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?

*Are you really speaking righteously, people together? Do you judge fairly, human children?

2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.

*Yes, you do bad things from your heart; you measure the violence you use in your actions on Earth.

3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

*Bad people separate themselves from birth: they go wrong immediately after being born, telling lies.

4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;

*Their poison is similar to a snake's venom. They act like a deaf snake that doesn't hear, ignoring warnings.

5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

*They won't listen to the voice of those who charm, no matter how smart the charm may be.

6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.

*Make their teeth fail, God, when they try to bite: destroy the powerful teeth of the young lions, Lord.

7 Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

*Let them disappear like flowing water; when he readies his bow to shoot arrows, let them be broken into pieces.

8 As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

*Like a melting snail, let them all disappear; as a premature baby, they shouldn't see the sun.

9 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.

*Before the pots get hurt by thorns, he will remove them quickly, like a strong wind, taking both the alive ones and those he's angry with.

10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

*The good people will be happy when they see justice done. They will clean their feet with the blood of the bad people.

11 So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

*So that a person can say, Truly, there is a reward for those who do good: truly, he is a God who makes fair decisions on Earth.
