1
O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
*Thank God, because He's kind and His love lasts forever.
2
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
*Let those saved by God speak up, who God has saved from the power of the enemy.
3
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
*He brought them together from all directions: east, west, north, and south.
4
They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
*They roamed through the desert alone, without a home to live in.
5
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
*Very hungry and thirsty, they felt weak inside.
6
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
*Then they called to God for help when they were in trouble, and He saved them from their problems.
7
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
*He showed them the correct path so they could reach a living city.
8
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
*Oh, how great it would be if people praised the Lord for his kindness and amazing deeds done for people!
9
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
*He satisfies the desireful heart and fills the famished soul with goodness.
10
Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
*They sit in darkness and shadows, experiencing pain and held by chains.
11
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
*Because they went against God's words and disregarded the advice of the highest authority.
12
Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
*So, he made them tired by working hard, and they collapsed. Nobody was there to assist them.
13
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
*Then they called to God for help when they were in trouble, and He rescued them from their problems.
14
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
*He took them from darkness and the threat of death, and broke their chains apart.
15
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
*Oh, how great it would be if people praised the Lord for his kindness and amazing deeds done for people!
16
For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
*He has shattered bronze gates and split apart iron bars.
17
Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
*Fools suffer due to their wrongdoing and sinful actions.
18
Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
*Their souls strongly dislike all types of food from animals; they are getting close to the gates leading to death.
19
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
*Then they call to God when they're in trouble, and He saves them from their problems.
20
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
*He sent a message, cured them, and saved them from destruction.
21
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
*Oh, how great it would be if people praised the Lord for his kindness and amazing deeds done for people!
22
And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
*And have them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, while they tell others about his great deeds with joy.
23
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
*Those who travel by ship on big waters for trade.
24
These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
*These witness the LORD's actions and marvels in the ocean depths.
25
For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
*He orders and raises the strong wind, which lifts the waves.
26
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
*They rise to heaven, then descend to deep waters; their soul melts due to hardship.
27
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end.
*They stumble left and right, wobble like a person who's drunk, and don't know what to do.
28
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
*Then they call to God when they're in trouble, and He helps them get out of their problems.
29
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
*He turns the storm into calmness, making the waves quiet.
30
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
*Then, they are happy because they are calm; so he takes them to their desired destination.
31
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
*Oh, how great it would be if people praised the Lord for his kindness and amazing deeds done for people!
32
Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
*Praise him in the group of people and in the gathering of older individuals.
33
He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
*He changes rivers into a barren land and turns water sources into dry land.
34
A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
*A fertile land becomes empty because of the bad actions of the people living there.
35
He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
*He changes the desert into a place with water, and turns dry land into areas with flowing water.
36
And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
*There, he helps those who are hungry by providing them a place to live so they can build a city for people to live in.
37
And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
*Plant fields and create vineyards to grow more fruit.
38
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
*He blesses them, making them increase in number; and he doesn't let their animals decrease.
39
Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
*Once more, they are made weak and humbled by mistreatment, pain, and sadness.
40
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
*He shows disdain for rulers, making them lose their way in the wild, where there's no path.
41
Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
*He lifts up the poor from trouble and gives them many family members, like a group of sheep.
42
The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
*The good people will see it and be happy. All wrongdoing will make her silent.
43
Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
