Chapter 106

1 Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

*Praise the Lord! Thank him because he's good, and his kindness lasts forever.

2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise?

*Who can tell about the great things the LORD has done? Who can show how wonderful He is?

3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

*Blessed are those who follow fairness and always do what is right.

4 Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;

*Remember me, God, with your kindness to your people. Come and save me.

5 That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.

*So that I can witness the goodness of the people you have picked, and so that I can be happy with the joy of your people, and so that I can boast about your special group of people.

6 We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

*We've made mistakes with our parents, we've done something wrong, we've acted badly.

7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.

*Our ancestors didn't understand your miracles in Egypt. They forgot all your kindness. Instead, they angered you at the Red Sea.

8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.

*However, he rescued them so people would know how powerful he is.

9 He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.

*He told the Red Sea to stop having water, and it did. Then he guided them through the deep water like they were walking in the desert.

10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

*He rescued them from their enemy who hated them and bought them back from the hands of their foe.

11 And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.

*The water defeated their foes, leaving none alive.

12 Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

*Then, they trusted what he said; they celebrated his greatness.

13 They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:

*They quickly forgot what he did; they didn't wait for his advice.

14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

*But wanted much in the desert, and tested God in the dry land.

15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

*He granted their wish, but made their souls weak.

16 They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

*In the camp, people also envied Moses and Aaron, who was a holy person of God.

17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.

*The ground suddenly closed on Dathan and also engulfed Abiram's group.

18 And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

*A fire started among them, and it destroyed the bad people.

19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

*They created an idol at Horeb and bowed down to it.

20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

*So, they transformed their greatness into something like a cow that eats grass.

21 They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;

*They forgot their rescuer God, who had done amazing things in Egypt.

22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

*Amazing acts in Ham's land, and scary events by the red sea.

23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

*So, he planned to destroy them, but Moses, God's chosen one, stood in the gap to stop him and calm his anger, preventing their destruction.

24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:

*Yes, they disliked the good land, they did not believe his message.

25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.

*But they complained in their shelters and did not listen to God's voice.

26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

*So, he raised his hand to destroy them in the desert.

27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

*To defeat their descendants too and spread them across different countries.

28 They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

*They connected with Baalpeor and ate the offerings of the deceased.

29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

*So, they made him angry with their creations, and the disease struck them.

30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

*Then Phinehas stood up and made a fair decision. This stopped the disease from spreading further.

31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

*This means that this action was considered as making him right with God, benefiting him and his descendants forever.

32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

*They made him angry at the troubled waters, causing problems for Moses because of them.

33 Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

*Because they made him angry, he spoke without thinking carefully first.

34 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them:

*They didn't destroy the nations that the Lord told them to.

35 But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.

*But they joined the non-believers and learned what they did.

36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

*They worshiped false gods, which trapped them.

37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,

*Yes, they offered their children to evil spirits.

38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.

*They killed innocent people, including their own children, by offering them to false gods. This made the land very dirty with blood.

39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.

*So, they became unclean through their own actions and started to stray by following their own ideas.

40 Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

*So, God became very angry with his people, to the point where he hated what belonged to him.

41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.

*He let them be controlled by non-believers, and those who disliked them were their rulers.

42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.

*Their opponents mistreated them, making them submit to their control.

43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.

*He saved them often, but they angered him with their plans, and they suffered because of their wrongdoing.

44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:

*However, he paid attention to their suffering after hearing their cries.

45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.

*He recalled his promise with them and felt sorry based on the great kindness he had shown.

46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

*He caused them to be feel sorry for, by everyone who took them as prisoners.

47 Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.

*Help us, God, and bring us together from among non-believers, so we can thank you and celebrate your name.

48 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.

*Praised be the eternal God of Israel now and forever! Everyone say "Amen." Praise the Lord.
