Chapter 59

1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.

*Protect me from my opponents, God: safeguard me from those who want to challenge me.

2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

*Free me from the people doing wrong things, and rescue me from those who are violent.

3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.

*For indeed, they are planning to catch me; powerful people have joined together against me. It's not because of my wrongdoing or my sin, Lord.

4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.

*They hurry and get ready without my mistake: wake up to assist me, and see.

5 Thou therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

*So, Lord God of armies, God of Israel, wake up and judge all non-believers; don't be kind to any evil sinners. Pause for reflection.

6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

*At night, they come back and act like a barking dog while going around the city.

7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?

*Look, they spit out words like threats: their teeth look like swords; they ask if anyone is listening.

8 But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.

*But you, Lord, will laugh at them; you will scoff at all the non-believers.

9 Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.

*I'll wait for you because of your power; God is my protection.

10 The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.

*The kind God will protect me: I'll witness my wish coming true against those who oppose me.

11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.

*Don't destroy them completely, or my people might forget; use your strength to disperse them and, O Lord, be our protection as you bring them down.

12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.

*For the wrong things they say with their mouth and the lies on their lips, let them be caught by their pride, because of their cursing and dishonest words.

13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.

*In anger, destroy those who oppose us, so they cease to exist. Show them that God is in control over Israel everywhere on Earth. Pause for reflection.

14 And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.

*At night, they should come back and act like a barking dog while going around the city.

15 Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.

*Let them search high and low for food, and complain if they're not full.

16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

*I will sing about your strength! In the morning, I'll loudly praise your kindness because you protected me during hard times.

17 Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

*To you, my strength, I'll sing: because God protects me and is the god of kindness and compassion.
