Chapter 16

1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

*Keep me safe, God: because only you can be trusted.

2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

*Oh, my inner self, you told God, "You are my ruler." My goodness doesn't reach you.

3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

*But to the holy people on Earth, and to the amazing ones, who bring me great joy.

4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

*Those who chase other gods will have more sorrow. I won't accept their blood sacrifices or say their names.

5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

*The LORD is my share of the family land and my cup of blessing; you ensure my part is protected.

6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

*The verses say: My boundaries have been set in nice areas; yes, I have a wonderful inheritance.

7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

*I will praise the Lord, who has guided me: my mind also teaches me at night time.

8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

*I constantly remember God in front of me; since he's by my side, I won't be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

*So, my heart is happy, and the good part of me celebrates. My body will also relax with hope.

10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

*Because you won't let my spirit stay in the dark place called Hell; and you won't allow your special one to decay or rot.

11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

*You will show me the way to live: being with you brings great happiness; by your side, there are endless pleasures forever.
