Chapter 54

1 Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.

*Help me, God, using your name, and decide my case using your power.

2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.

*Listen to my request, God; pay attention to what I say.

3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.

*Strangers attack me, and oppressors chase me. They don't think about God. (A pause is called for.)

4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.

*Look, God is my helper: the Lord is with those who support me.

5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.

*He will punish my enemies for their wrongdoing: eliminate them with your honesty.

6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.

*I will happily give to you. I will praise your name, God, because it is good.

7 For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

*He saved me from everything that troubled me, and I saw that he accomplished what he wanted against my enemies.
