Chapter 78

1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
*Listen, my people, to my teachings: pay attention to the words coming from my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:
*I will speak in a story: I will share deep words from long ago.
3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
*Which we heard and learned, and our parents told us too.
4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
*We won't keep them secret from future generations. We'll show everyone the great things about the Lord, his power, and the amazing things he has done.
5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
*He set up a promise for the people of Jacob and made rules for the people of Israel, which he told our ancestors to teach their kids.
6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:
*So that future generations would know about them, including newborn children. These children would then tell their own children about them.
7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
*So that they can trust in God and not forget what God has done, while following his rules.
8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
*They may not be like their parents, who were stubborn and disobedient. They didn't have their hearts set right and their spirits weren't steady with God.
9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
*The Ephraim kids, with weapons and bows, retreated during the fight.
10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;
*They didn't follow God's agreement and refused to obey his rules.
11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.
*And forgot his deeds and the amazing things he had shown them.
12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
*He did amazing things in Egypt, in the land of Zoan, for his people to see.
13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.
*He separated the sea, letting them pass through, and turned the water into a solid wall.
14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
*During the day, he guided them with a cloud, and at night, with a fire-light.
15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
*He broke the rocks in the desert and provided them with water, like from a deep source.
16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
*He made water flow from the rock, making it look like big rivers were flowing.
17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.
*They disobeyed even more by upsetting God in the desert.
18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
*They tried to test God by wanting food because of their strong desires.
19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
*Yes, they talked badly about God. They asked, can God set up a table with food in the desert?
20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
*Look, he hit the rock, and water came out, with streams overflowing. Can he also give bread? Can he supply meat for his people?
21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
*So, God heard this and got angry. This led to a fire against the people of Jacob, and anger against the nation of Israel.
22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
*Because they didn't believe in God and didn't rely on his rescue.
23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
*Even though he told the clouds to move from up high and opened the gates of heaven,
24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
*And sent down manna for them to eat, giving them food from heaven's grain.
25 Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.
*People ate special food given by angels. They provided so much meat that everyone was full.
26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
*He made the wind come from the east in the sky, and with his strength, he also brought the wind from the south.
27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
*He sent down flesh for them like falling rain, and bird-like creatures as numerous as beach sand.
28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
*He dropped it in their camp area, near their living spaces.
29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
*So they ate and became full: for he provided what they wanted.
30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
*They didn't distance themselves from their desires. As they ate their meat, the words were still in their mouths.
31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
*God's anger hit them, killing their strongest people, and defeating Israel's best warriors.
32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
*For all these things, they kept on sinning and did not believe in his amazing acts.
33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.
*So, he shortened their lives full of uselessness, and made their years filled with difficulties.
34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.
*When he killed them, they looked for him. They went back and searched for God right away.
35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
*They recalled that God was like a strong rock for them, and the great God saved them.
36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
*However, they complimented him with their words, and they lied to him with their language.
37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
*They didn't truly follow God and weren't loyal to his agreement.
38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.
*But he, filled with kindness, forgave their wrongdoing and didn't destroy them. In fact, he often stopped being angry and didn't use all his anger.
39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
*He remembered they were just flesh - like wind, gone quickly and never coming back.
40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
*They often irritated him in the wilderness and saddened him in the desert.
41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
*Yes, they went back and tested God, and restricted the Almighty One of Israel.
42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.
*They forgot about his help and the time he saved them from their enemies.
43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:
*How he performed his miracles in Egypt, and his amazing acts in the land of Zoan:
44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
*And made their rivers bloody; and their streams, so they couldn't drink from them.
45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
*He sent different types of flies that ate them, and frogs that harmed them.
46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.
*He even let the caterpillar have their growth and made the locust take their hard work.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.
*He damaged their grape plants with hail and their fig trees with cold weather.
48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
*He let their animals be taken by the hail, and their sheep by lightning storms.
49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.
*He unleashed his anger, rage, and displeasure on them, along with troubles, by letting bad spirits affect them.
50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;
*He showed his anger; he didn't spare them from dying, but handed them over to sickness.
51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
*And struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, including their strongest people in the homes of Ham's descendants.
52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
*But he led his people out like sheep, guiding them through the desert like a shepherd.
53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
*He guided them safely, making them fearless, while the sea engulfed their foes.
54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.
*He took them to the edge of his holy place, to the mountain that his strong hand bought.
55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
*He removed non-believers from their path, gave them land based on family groups, and let the people of Israel live in their tents.
56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
*However, they tried to tempt and irritate the highest God, and did not follow His teachings.
57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
*But they went back, acting disloyally like their ancestors: they got sidetracked like a tricky bow.
58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
*They made him angry with their tall worship places and made him jealous with their carved pictures.
59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
*When God heard this, he became angry and strongly disliked Israel.
60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
*So he left the Shiloh shelter, the tent he set up among people;
61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.
*He gave his power to be taken by the enemies, and his greatness too.
62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
*He let his people be taken by the sword too, and he was angry at his land's inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
*The fire took the young men, and the girls didn't get married.
64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
*Their priests were killed with swords, and their widows didn't cry in sorrow.
65 Then the LORD awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
*Then God woke up, as if coming out of a deep sleep, and he roared loudly, like a strong man who shouts because of drinking too much wine.
66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
*And he defeated his foes from behind, leaving them with eternal shame.
67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
*He didn't accept Joseph's shelter and did not choose Ephraim's tribe.
68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
*But picked the Judah tribe, the Mount Zion he really liked.
69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
*He constructed his holy place like tall royal buildings, just like the stable Earth that will last forever.
70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
*He picked David, his helper, from taking care of sheep.
71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
*He led sheep with young ones, and provided food for Jacob's people, as well as their land inheritance, which was Israel.
72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
*So, he fed them with care from his heart and guided them skillfully with his hands.
