Chapter 144

1 Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:

*Praised is the Lord, my power, who teaches my hands for battle and my fingers for fighting.

2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

*My goodness, my protection; my strong tower, and my savior; my shield, and the one I trust; who defeats my enemies for me.

3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!

*GOD, why do you care about people? Or why do you think about us, since we are just humans?

4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

*People are like something not important; their lives are like a shadow that quickly goes away.

5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

*Lower your sky, Lord, and descend; touch the mountains, and they'll become smoky.

6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.

*Send lightning to disperse them; launch your arrows to eliminate them.

7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;

*Put your hand down from up high; save me and get me away from deep water, far from the hands of foreign kids;

8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

*Whose mouth talks nonsense, and their right hand does nothing honest.

9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

*I'll sing a new song to you, God: using a 10-stringed instrument, I'll praise you.

10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

*He saves kings and protects David, his servant, from dangerous swords.

11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:

*Remove them and save me from the grasp of these foreign kids, who speak nonsense with their mouths and have a hand of deceit.

12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:

*So our children can grow strong and healthy when they're young, and our girls can be like well-shaped building blocks, made smooth and shiny like a beautiful palace.

13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:

*So that our storage is filled with lots of food, and so many sheep give birth that our streets are filled with thousands and tens of thousands of newborns.

14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.

*So our animals can work well; to keep things safe inside and outside; and to have no complaints in our town.

15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

*Blessed are those people whose situation is like this: yes, blessed are those people, who have the LORD as their God.
