Numbers

Tells about the Israelites' 40 years in the desert, including their travels and the census of their tribes.

Chapter 26

1 And it came to pass after the plague, that the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,

*Then, after the plague, the LORD talked to Moses and Eleazar, who was Aaron's son and a priest, saying,

2 Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, throughout their fathers’ house, all that are able to go to war in Israel.

*Add up all the people in Israel aged 20 and above who can fight, according to their family groups.

3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

*Moses and Eleazar the priest talked to them in the open land of Moab, close to the Jordan River near Jericho, saying,

4 Take the sum of the people, from twenty years old and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt.

*Add up all the people aged 20 and above, just like the LORD told Moses and the Israelites, who left Egypt.

5 Reuben, the eldest son of Israel: the children of Reuben; Hanoch, of whom cometh the family of the Hanochites: of Pallu, the family of the Palluites:

*Reuben, the oldest child of Israel has a group called the Reubenites. In this group, there is a person named Hanoch who started another group known as the Hanochites. Also, there's a group called the Palluites that comes from Pallu.

6 Of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites: of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.

*From Hezron's descendants, the Hezronite group; from Carmi, the Carmite group.

7 These are the families of the Reubenites: and they that were numbered of them were forty and three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.

*Here is the list of Reubenite families, and there were 43,730 people counted in total.

8 And the sons of Pallu; Eliab.

*And the children of Pallu were Eliab.

9 And the sons of Eliab; Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. This is that Dathan and Abiram, which were famous in the congregation, who strove against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they strove against the LORD:

*And Eliab's children were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These were the well-known Dathan and Abiram, who opposed Moses and Aaron together with Korah, as they rebelled against God.

10 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, what time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men: and they became a sign.

*The ground gulped down Korah and those with him when their group died. This happened while fire killed 250 people. They served as a warning sign.

11 Notwithstanding the children of Korah died not.

*Despite that, the children of Korah did not die.

12 The sons of Simeon after their families: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites: of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites: of Jachin, the family of the Jachinites:

*The descendants of Simeon, based on their families: from Nemuel, the group called Nemuelites; from Jamin, the group known as Jaminites; and from Jachin, another group called Jachinites.

13 Of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites: of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.

*From Zerah's family, the Zarhites; from Shaul, the Shaulites' family.

14 These are the families of the Simeonites, twenty and two thousand and two hundred.

*Here are the Simeonite family groups: there were 22,200 people in total.

15 The children of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites: of Haggi, the family of the Haggites: of Shuni, the family of the Shunites:

*The descendants of Gad by their groups: from Zephon, the group of the Zephonites; from Haggi, the group of the Haggites; from Shuni, the group of the Shunites.

16 Of Ozni, the family of the Oznites: of Eri, the family of the Erites:

*The family of Ozni, called Oznites; the family of Eri, called Erites.

17 Of Arod, the family of the Arodites: of Areli, the family of the Arelites.

*The Arodites' family from Arod; the Arelites' family from Areli.

18 These are the families of the children of Gad according to those that were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred.

*Here are the family groups of Gad's kids, based on the count: 40,500 of them.

19 The sons of Judah were Er and Onan: and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

*The children of Judah were named Er and Onan, but both Er and Onan passed away in the land called Canaan.

20 And the sons of Judah after their families were; of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites: of Pharez, the family of the Pharzites: of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites.

*The descendants of Judah, grouped by families, were as follows: from Shelah came the Shelanites; from Pharez, the Pharzites; and from Zerah, the Zarhites.

21 And the sons of Pharez were; of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites: of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.

*Pharez's sons had two groups: one from Hezron, called Hezronites; another from Hamul, called Hamulites.

22 These are the families of Judah according to those that were numbered of them, threescore and sixteen thousand and five hundred.

*Here is the list of Judah's family groups based on the count: there were 16,500 people in total.

23 Of the sons of Issachar after their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites: of Pua, the family of the Punites:

*From the children of Issachar by their groups: from Tola, the group of the Tolaites; from Pua, the group of the Punites.

24 Of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites: of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.

*The verse says: About Jashub and his people, called Jashubites; about Shimron and his people, called Shimronites.

25 These are the families of Issachar according to those that were numbered of them, threescore and four thousand and three hundred.

*Here is the list of Issachar's family members, and there were 364 people in total.

26 Of the sons of Zebulun after their families: of Sered, the family of the Sardites: of Elon, the family of the Elonites: of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.

*From Zebulun's children and their groups: from Sered, the group called Sardites; from Elon, the group named Elonites; from Jahleel, the group known as Jahleelites.

27 These are the families of the Zebulunites according to those that were numbered of them, threescore thousand and five hundred.

*Here is the list of Zebulunite families based on the count of their people, totaling 60,500 individuals.

28 The sons of Joseph after their families were Manasseh and Ephraim.

*Manasseh and Ephraim were the family members of Joseph's sons.

29 Of the sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites: and Machir begat Gilead: of Gilead come the family of the Gileadites.

*From the children of Manasseh: from Machir, the group called Machirites: and Machir had a son named Gilead: from Gilead came the family called Gileadites.

30 These are the sons of Gilead: of Jeezer, the family of the Jeezerites: of Helek, the family of the Helekites:

*These are Gilead's children: from Jeezer, the group called Jeezerites; from Helek, the group called Helekites.

31 And of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites: and of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites:

*And of Asriel, the Asrielite group: and of Shechem, the Shechemite group:

32 And of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites: and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.

*And of Shemida, the descendants called Shemidaites: and of Hepher, the descendants called Hepherites.

33 And Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

*Zelophehad, a son of Hepher, had no sons only daughters. His daughters were named Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

34 These are the families of Manasseh, and those that were numbered of them, fifty and two thousand and seven hundred.

*Here is the list of Manasseh's family groups, and there were 52,700 people counted in them.

35 These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthalhites: of Becher, the family of the Bachrites: of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.

*This is a list of Ephraim's descendants by their groups: From Shuthelah came the Shuthalhites; from Becher, the Bachrites; and from Tahan, the Tahanites.

36 And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.

*These are Shuthelah's children: from Eran comes the group known as the Eranites.

37 These are the families of the sons of Ephraim according to those that were numbered of them, thirty and two thousand and five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph after their families.

*This verse says there were 32,500 people in Ephraim's family when they counted them. This is talking about a part of the bigger family called Joseph's family.

38 The sons of Benjamin after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites: of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites: of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites:

*The descendants of Benjamin by their groups: from Bela, the group of the Belaites; from Ashbel, the group of the Ashbelites; from Ahiram, the group of the Ahiramites.

39 Of Shupham, the family of the Shuphamites: of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites.

*From Shupham, the descendants called Shuphamites; from Hupham, the descendants called Huphamites.

40 And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites: and of Naaman, the family of the Naamites.

*And Bela's children were Ard and Naaman: from Ard came the Ardite family, and from Naaman, the Naamite family.

41 These are the sons of Benjamin after their families: and they that were numbered of them were forty and five thousand and six hundred.

*Here are Benjamin's descendants by their groups, and those counted were 45,600.

42 These are the sons of Dan after their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan after their families.

*These are Dan's children grouped by their families: from Shuham, the family called Shuhamites. These are Dan's family groups organized by their families.

43 All the families of the Shuhamites, according to those that were numbered of them, were threescore and four thousand and four hundred.

*All the Shuhamite families had a total of 36,400 people when they were counted.

44 Of the children of Asher after their families: of Jimna, the family of the Jimnites: of Jesui, the family of the Jesuites: of Beriah, the family of the Beriites.

*From the descendants of Asher based on their groups: from Jimna, the group of the Jimnites; from Jesui, the group of the Jesuites; from Beriah, the group of the Beriites.

45 Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites: of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites.

*From Beriah's children: Heber's group is the Heberites; Malchiel's group is the Malchielites.

46 And the name of the daughter of Asher was Sarah.

*The daughter of Asher's name was Sarah.

47 These are the families of the sons of Asher according to those that were numbered of them; who were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

*This verse says there were 53,400 people in the Asher family when they counted them.

48 Of the sons of Naphtali after their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites: of Guni, the family of the Gunites:

*From the children of Naphtali by their groups: from Jahzeel, the group of people called Jahzeelites; from Guni, the group of people called Gunites.

49 Of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites: of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.

*From Jezer, the descendants of the Jezerites; from Shillem, the descendants of the Shillemites.

50 These are the families of Naphtali according to their families: and they that were numbered of them were forty and five thousand and four hundred.

*Here is the list of Naphtali family groups: There were 45,400 people counted in these groups.

51 These were the numbered of the children of Israel, six hundred thousand and a thousand seven hundred and thirty.

*These were the counted kids of Israel: six hundred thousand plus one thousand seven hundred and thirty.

52 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

*And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

53 Unto these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names.

*The land will be shared among them as an inheritance, based on how many names there are.

54 To many thou shalt give the more inheritance, and to few thou shalt give the less inheritance: to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.

*Give more inheritance to many and less to few, based on how many were counted for each person.

55 Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit.

*Even though, the land will be divided into parts based on chance; they will own the land according to the names of their ancestral tribes.

56 According to the lot shall the possession thereof be divided between many and few.

*The land will be divided among many or few people based on chance.

57 And these are they that were numbered of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites: of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites: of Merari, the family of the Merarites.

*These are the Levites counted by families: Gershon's family (Gershonites), Kohath's family (Kohathites), and Merari's family (Merarites).

58 These are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korathites. And Kohath begat Amram.

*Here are the Levite groups: Libnites, Hebronites, Mahlites, Mushites, and Korathites. Kohath had a son named Amram.

59 And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi in Egypt: and she bare unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.

*Amram's wife was named Jochebed, who was Levi's daughter, born in Egypt. She had children with Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam.

60 And unto Aaron was born Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

*Aaron had four sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

61 And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD.

*Nadab and Abihu passed away after they presented unusual fire to God.

62 And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.

*There were 23,000 males in this group, from one month old and up. They weren't counted as part of the Israelites because they didn't get any land like the others did.

63 These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

*These are the people counted by Moses and Priest Eleazar when they counted the Israelites in the area called Moab, close to the Jordan River and near Jericho.

64 But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

*But none of those men were counted by Moses and Aaron when they counted the Israelites in the Sinai desert.

65 For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

*The Lord said that these people would die in the desert. None of them survived except for Caleb and Joshua.
