Tells about the Israelites' 40 years in the desert, including their travels and the census of their tribes.

Chapter 34

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of Canaan; (this is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan with the coasts thereof:)

*Tell the people of Israel, when you enter the land of Canaan (this is the land you will inherit, the land of Canaan including its coasts).

3 Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward:

*Then your southern boundary will start at the desert of Zin and go along the seashore of Edom. Your southern limit will be the farthest point of the salty sea going east.

4 And your border shall turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass on to Zin: and the going forth thereof shall be from the south to Kadeshbarnea, and shall go on to Hazaraddar, and pass on to Azmon:

*Your boundary will start at the south and go up to Akrabbim's climb. Then it will move to Zin. It will begin again in the south at Kadeshbarnea and continue to Hazaraddar, then go to Azmon.

5 And the border shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea.

*The border will go from Azmon to the Egyptian river, and its edges will reach the sea.

6 And as for the western border, ye shall even have the great sea for a border: this shall be your west border.

*The western boundary will be the big sea; that's where your land ends.

7 And this shall be your north border: from the great sea ye shall point out for you mount Hor:

*This means: Your northern border will start at the big sea, and you'll find Mount Hor as a reference point for it.

8 From mount Hor ye shall point out your border unto the entrance of Hamath; and the goings forth of the border shall be to Zedad:

*Starting from Mount Hor, mark your boundary up to Hamath's entrance. The border will then extend to a place called Zedad.

9 And the border shall go on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it shall be at Hazarenan: this shall be your north border.

*The boundary will extend to Ziphron, and its end will be at Hazarenan; this will be your northern edge.

10 And ye shall point out your east border from Hazarenan to Shepham:

*And you will show your eastern border from Hazarenan to Shepham.

11 And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward:

*The shore will go from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain. The border will then go down and reach the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth going eastward.

12 And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.

*The boundary will reach the Jordan River, and its edges will extend to the salty sea. This area, along with its surrounding shores, will be your land.

13 And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe:

*Moses told the Israelites, "This is the land you will receive by drawing lots. The LORD instructed to give it to the nine tribes and half a tribe."

14 For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance:

*For the descendants of the tribe of Reuben, based on their family groups, and the descendants of the tribe of Gad, based on their family groups, have received their land. Also, half of the tribe of Manasseh has received their land.

15 The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising.

*The two and a half tribes got their land area by the Jordan River close to Jericho, facing where the sun rises.

16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

*And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

17 These are the names of the men which shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun.

*These are the people who will give you land parts: Eleazar the priest and Joshua, son of Nun.

18 And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance.

*Choose one leader from each group, and they will split the land among everyone as an inheritance.

19 And the names of the men are these: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

*In the tribe of Judah, the man's name is Caleb, son of Jephunneh.

20 And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.

*From the family of Simeon's kids, Samuel was the child of Ammihud.

21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.

*From the Benjamin tribe, Elidad, son of Chislon.

22 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.

*The leader from the Dan tribe's group of kids is Bukki, son of Jogli.

23 The prince of the children of Joseph, for the tribe of the children of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod.

*The leader of the family of Joseph's kids, for the group of Manasseh's kids, is Hanniel, son of Ephod.

24 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.

*And the leader of the Ephraim family group, Kemuel, who was Shiphtan's son.

25 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.

*The leader of the group from Zebulun's family was a man named Elizaphan, who was the son of Parnach.

26 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Issachar, Paltiel the son of Azzan.

*The leader from the group of Issachar's kids is Paltiel, son of Azzan.

27 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.

*The leader of the group from the family of Asher's kids is Ahihud, son of Shelomi.

28 And the prince of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.

*The leader from the Naphtali tribe's family was Pedahel, son of Ammihud.

29 These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

*These are the people the LORD told to give land to the Israeli children in the land called Canaan.
