1
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.
*Like snow in summer and rain in harvest, it's not right for a foolish person to have honor.
2
As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
*Like a bird that roams or a swallow that flies, a pointless curse won't happen.
3
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.
*A whip for horses, a bridle for donkeys, and a stick for foolish people's backs.
4
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
*Don't answer a foolish person in their foolish way, or you might become like them.
5
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
*Talk back to a foolish person in the way they are foolish, so they don't think they are smart and become proud.
6
He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.
*Sending a message through a foolish person is like cutting off their feet and causing harm to yourself.
7
The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
*The verse says that a saying from foolish people is like an uneven leg; it's not balanced or correct.
8
As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.
*As the one who ties a stone in a sling, the same is the person who honors a foolish person.
9
As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
*Like a thorn that enters a drunk's hand, a parable is like a foolish person talking nonsense.
10
The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.
*The big God who made everything gives rewards to the foolish person, and also rewards those who break rules.
11
As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.
*Like a dog going back to its sickness, a foolish person goes back to their silly mistakes.
12
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
*Do you see someone who thinks they are very smart? There is more hope for a foolish person than for them.
13
The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
*The lazy person says, "There's a dangerous animal blocking my path; a scary animal is roaming the streets."
14
As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.
*As the door swings on its hinges, similarly, the lazy person lounges on their bed.
15
The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.
*The lazy person hides their hand in their chest; they don't want to bring it back to their mouth.
16
The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.
*The lazy person thinks they're smarter than seven people who can give good explanations.
17
He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.
*Someone who gets involved in someone else's fight is like a person grabbing a dog's ears, causing trouble without being responsible for it.
18
As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,
*Like a crazy person throwing flames, arrows, and death.
19
So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?
*So is the person who tricks their neighbor and says, Am I not just joking?
20
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
*In places without wood, fires die down. Similarly, when there's no one to gossip, conflicts end.
21
As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.
*Like hot coals fuel a fire and wood feeds flames, a quarrelsome person starts arguments.
22
The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
*A gossip's words are like injuries, and they deeply hurt the core of one's stomach.
23
Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.
*Lips on fire and a bad heart are like a broken pot with silver waste on it.
24
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;
*He who hates pretends with his lips and stores deceit inside himself.
25
When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.
*When he says nice things, don't trust him; because in his heart, there are seven terrible things.
26
Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.
*Whoever hides their hate with lies will be exposed to everyone in the group for being bad.
27
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
*Whoever digs a hole will fall into it; and whoever rolls a stone, it will bounce back on them.
28
A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
*A dishonest tongue hates people it hurts with lies; and a mouth that praises brings destruction.
