1
My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
*My child, if you want to accept my teachings and keep them secret within you;
2
So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
*To listen carefully to wisdom and put your heart into understanding.
3
Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
*Yes, if you seek knowledge and shout for wisdom.
4
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
*If you search for her like silver or hidden treasure.
5
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
*Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will discover God's knowledge.
6
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
*The LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
7
He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
*He saves good advice for honest people; he protects those who walk with integrity.
8
He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
*He maintains the paths of righteousness and protects the path of his faithful followers.
9
Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
*Then you will understand what is fair, just, and fairness; yes, every good way.
10
When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
*When you understand wise ideas in your mind, and learning feels good for your spirit.
11
Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
*Be careful to stay safe, and be smart to stay wise.
12
To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
*To save you from the path of the bad person, from the person who says wrong things;
13
Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
*Who choose to stray from what is right, and instead follow the path of darkness;
14
Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
*Who enjoy doing bad things and love the sneaky ways of evil people;
15
Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
*Whose paths are twisted, and they go astray in their ways.
16
To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
*To save you from the unusual woman, even from the foreigner who flatters with her words;
17
Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
*Which leaves behind her youth's guidance, and forgets her God's agreement.
18
For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
*Her home leans towards death, and her paths lead to the dead.
19
None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
*Those who go to her never come back, nor do they grab onto the ways of living.
20
That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
*So that you can follow the path of good people and stay on the course of those who do what is right.
21
For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
*The honest people will live here, and the blameless ones will stay.
22
But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
*But bad people will be removed from the world, and those who break rules will be taken away from it.
