1
Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
*Wisdom has constructed her home; she has created her seven supporting columns.
2
She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
*She slaughtered her animals, mixed her drink, and prepared her meal.
3
She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
*She sent her helpers; she shouts from the tallest spots in the city.
4
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
*"If you are naive, come here; but if you lack wisdom, she tells you,
5
Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
*Come, have some of my food and drink the mixed wine.
6
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
*Leave foolishness behind and live; follow the path of wisdom.
7
He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
*When you correct someone who makes fun, you feel embarrassed; when you scold a bad person, it reflects badly on you.
8
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
*Don't correct a mocker, or he'll dislike you; but scold a wise person, and they'll appreciate you.
9
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
*Teach a smart person, and they'll become even smarter; teach a fair person, and they'll grow more knowledgeable.
10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
*Fearing God leads to wisdom, and knowing what's holy helps you understand things better.
11
For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
*Through me, your life will last longer with more days, and you'll have a longer lifespan with extra years.
12
If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
*If you are smart, be smart for yourself; but if you disregard this, you will face the consequences by yourself.
13
A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
*A silly woman talks a lot: she is naive and knows nothing.
14
For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
*She sits outside her home's entrance, in a high spot within the city's top area.
15
To call passengers who go right on their ways:
*To invite travelers walking the correct path:
16
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
*"If you are naive, come this way; and if you lack wisdom, she tells you,"
17
Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
*Stolen water tastes good, and hidden food is enjoyable.
18
But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
*But he doesn't know that the dead are there, and that her guests are deep in a place called hell.
