1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

*Then, after calling his twelve followers, Jesus gave them the ability to defeat bad spirits, expel them, and heal every kind of illness and disease.

2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

*The names of the 12 apostles are: Simon (called Peter), Andrew, James (son of Zebedee), and John (his brother).

3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

*Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James, son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, also called Lebbaeus.

4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

*Simon from Canaan and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

*Jesus sent out twelve people and told them not to go to non-Jewish people or any Samaritan cities.

6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

*But go instead to the lost sheep in Israel's family.

7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

*As you travel, tell others, "The kingdom of heaven is near."

8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

*Heal those who are ill, wash those with skin diseases, bring back those who have died, and expel evil spirits; since you were given these powers freely, also give them away for free.

9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

*Don't put any money, like gold or silver, in your wallets.

10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

*No money for your trip, not two jackets, not shoes or walking sticks either; because the worker deserves their food.

11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

*In any city or town you go to, find someone deserving and stay with them until you leave.

12 And when ye come into an house, salute it.

*And when you enter a home, greet it.

13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

*If the house is good, bring peace there; if not, keep peace with yourself.

14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

*If someone doesn't accept you or listen to your words after you leave their home or city, then simply shake the dust from your feet.

15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

*I truly tell you, it will be harder to be alive during Judgment Day in that city compared to the land of Sodom and Gomorrah.

16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

*Look, I'm sending you out among dangerous wolves. So, be smart like snakes and gentle like pigeons.

17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

*But be careful with people: because they will hand you over to the councils, and they will whip you in their meeting places.

18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

*You will appear before rulers and kings because of me, to testify against them and non-Jews.

19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

*But when they hand you over, don't worry about what or how to say something: because they will give you the words to say in that very moment.

20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

*It's not really you talking, but the Spirit of your Father who is doing the talking through you.

21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

*A sibling will turn over their brother to be killed, and a parent will betray their child. Also, children will rebel against their parents and kill them.

22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

*People will hate you for believing in me, but if you keep going until the end, you'll be saved.

23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

*When they harass you in one city, run to another. I promise you, you won't finish traveling through all of Israel until the Son of Man returns.

24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

*A student isn't greater than their teacher, and a servant isn't more important than their boss.

25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

*A student should be like their teacher, and a servant like their lord. If people called the house owner "Beelzebub," they would also call those in the house by that name.

26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

*Don't be afraid of them, because anything hidden will be revealed, and anything secret will be known.

27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

*What I say in private, share in public; and what you hear, proclaim loudly.

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

*Don't be afraid of those who can only harm your body, but instead, be afraid of the one who has the power to destroy both your soul and body in a place called hell.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

*Don't two sparrows cost a tiny coin? And not one will fall to the ground without your Father watching.

30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

*But every single hair on your head has a count.

31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

*Don't be afraid; you are more important than a lot of little birds.

32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

*Whoever confesses me in front of others, I will confess them in front of my Father in heaven too.

33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

*But whoever denies me in front of people, I will also deny them in front of my Father in heaven.

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

*Don't think I'm here just to bring peace on Earth; I didn't come for peace, but to bring a sword.

35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

*For I have come to cause disagreements between fathers and sons, daughters and mothers, and daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law.

36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

*Enemies will come from a person's own family.

37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

*If you love your dad, mom, son, or daughter more than me, you're not really mine.

38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

*If someone doesn't take up their cross and follows me, they are not deserving of me.

39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

*Finding your life means losing it, while losing your life for my sake means finding it.

40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

*If you welcome them, you welcome me; and if you welcome me, you welcome the one who sent me.

41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

*If you welcome a prophet because they are a prophet, you will get a reward like a prophet. And if you welcome a righteous person because they are righteous, you will get a reward like a righteous person.

42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

*Whoever gives a cup of cold water to one of these little ones just because they are a follower, I tell you truly, they will not miss their reward.
