3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

*Then Judas, who had betrayed Jesus, when he realized Jesus was sentenced, felt sorry and returned the 30 silver coins to the religious leaders.

4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

*"I have sinned by betraying innocent blood," he said. They replied, "It's not our concern. Deal with it yourself."

5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

*He threw the coins into the temple and left, then went away and hung himself.

6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

*The main priests got the silver coins and said they couldn't put them in the box because it was money from a death.

7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.

*They discussed and purchased the potter's field for burying non-locals.

8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

*So, the reason that field is still called "The field of blood" today is because of what happened there.

9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;

*Then, what Jeremy the prophet had said came true: They received the thirty pieces of silver, paying for the one the children of Israel had valued.

10 And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.

*And he gave them for the land where pots are made, just like the Lord asked me to do.

11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

*Jesus stood before the governor, who asked him if he was the King of the Jews. Jesus replied, "You say so."

12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

*When the high priests and older people accused him, he didn't say anything in his defense.

13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

*Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear how many times they testify against you?"

14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

*He didn't say anything in response, which amazed the governor a lot.

15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

*At that festival, the governor usually let the people choose a prisoner to free.

16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

*They held a famous captive named Barabbas at that time.

17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

*So when they all came together, Pilate asked them, "Who do you want me to let go? Barabbas or Jesus, also known as the Messiah?"

18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

*He understood that they handed him over because of jealousy.

19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

*When he sat on the judge's chair, his wife told him, Stay away from that righteous person. I had a bad dream about him and suffered a lot today because of him.

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

*But the main priests and older people convinced the big group of people to request Barabbas and get rid of Jesus.

21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.

*The governor asked, "Do you want me to free one of these two men? They replied, "Let's free Barabbas."

22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

*Pilate asks them, "What should I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?" They reply, "Crucify him."

23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

*The governor asked, "What did he do wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"

24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

*When Pilate realized he couldn't win and a crowd was getting angry, he washed his hands with water and told the people, "I'm not guilty of this righteous person's blood. You deal with it."

25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

*Then everyone replied, saying, "His blood will be on us and our future generations."

26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

*Then, he let Barabbas go. After beating Jesus, he handed him over to be put on a cross.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

*Then, the governor's soldiers brought Jesus to a shared room and collected all the soldiers there.

28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

*They took off his clothes and put a red robe on him.

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

*Then they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, giving him a reed in his right hand. They knelt down and made fun of him, saying, "Welcome, King of the Jews!"

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

*They spat on him, grabbed a reed, and hit him on the head.

31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

*Then, after making fun of him, they removed the cloak and gave back his normal clothes. They took him to a place to execute him by nailing him to a cross.

32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

*As they left, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon. They made him carry Jesus' cross.

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

*And when they reached a place called Golgotha, which means "skull place,"

34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

*They offered him a mixture of vinegar and gall to drink. After taking a sip, he refused to drink any more.

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

*They nailed him to a cross, divided his clothes, and threw dice for them. This happened just like the prophet said: "They split my clothes and threw dice for my clothing."

36 And sitting down they watched him there;

*They sat down and watched him there.

37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

*Write "This is Jesus, King of the Jews" on a sign and put it above his head.

38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

*Then, two robbers were crucified next to him, one on his right side and one on his left side.

39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

*People walking by made fun of him, shaking their heads.

40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

*"You who destroys the temple and rebuilds it in three days, save yourself! If you are truly the Son of God, come down from the cross."

41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

*Similarly, the main priests made fun of him together with the writers and older people. They said,

42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

*He rescued others but couldn't save himself. If he truly is the Israeli king, let him come down from the cross and then we'll believe in him.

43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

*He believed in God; now let Him save him if He wants to; because he said, "I am God's Son."

44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

*The thieves who were put to death next to him taunted him about it.

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

*Starting at midday, darkness covered the entire land until the ninth hour.

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

*At around noon, Jesus shouted loudly, "My God, my God, why did you leave me?

47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

*Some people there, when they heard it, said, "This man is calling for Elijah."

48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

*Right away, one of them grabbed a sponge, soaked it with vinegar, attached it to a stick, and offered it for him to drink.

49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

*The others replied, "Wait, let's see if Elijah will rescue him."

50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

*Jesus, after shouting loudly once more, breathed his last breath.

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

*And suddenly, the curtain of the temple tore apart from top to bottom; the ground shook, and the rocks split.

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

*The tombs opened, and lots of holy people's dead bodies woke up.

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

*After Jesus rose from the dead, he left the tombs and went to the holy city. There, he showed himself to many people.

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

*When the soldier and his friends, guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and strange events, they became very scared. They said, "This man must really be the Son of God."

55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:

*Many women watched from a distance, who had joined Jesus from Galilee, helping and serving him.

56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.

*Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of James and Joseph, and Zebedee's children's mother.

57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:

*When evening arrived, a wealthy man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who was also one of Jesus' followers, came.

58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

*He asked Pilate for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered it to be given.

59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

*When Joseph got the body, he covered it with a clean cloth.

60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

*He placed it in a new tomb he carved in the rock and closed it with a large stone. Then he left.

61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

*Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting near the tomb.

62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

*The following day after the preparation day, the main priests and Pharisees met with Pilate.

63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

*"Sir," they recalled, "that liar boasted, 'I'll rise again after three days while still alive.'"

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

*Tell them to secure the tomb until the third day, to prevent his followers from stealing him during the night and claiming he has risen from the dead. This could lead to more confusion and a greater mistake.

65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

*Pilate told them, "You have guards; go and do your best to ensure safety."

66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

*So they went and secured the tomb, covering the stone, and placing a guard.
