4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

*Peter replied to Jesus, saying, "Lord, it's great that we are here. If you want to, let's build three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

*As he was still talking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them. Then a voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my dear son, who makes me very happy. Listen to him."

6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

*When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, really scared.

7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

*Jesus approached, touched them, and said, "Get up and don't be scared."

8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

*When they looked up, they saw nobody but Jesus.

9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

*As they went down the mountain, Jesus told them not to share the vision with anyone until he was raised from the dead.

10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

*And his followers asked him, "So why do the writers say that Elijah has to come first?"

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

*And Jesus told them, "Elijah will indeed come first, and he will fix everything."

12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

*But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and people didn't recognize him, they did whatever they wanted to him. The same way, the Son of Man will be treated badly by them.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

*Then, the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist.

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

*When they reached the large crowd, a man knelt before Jesus and said to him,

15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

*Dear God, please be kind to my child. He has a mental illness and is very upset. Often, he accidentally falls into fire or water.

16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

*I took the person to your followers, but they couldn't heal him.

17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.

*Then Jesus replied, "Unbelieving and twisted people, why do I have to stay with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring that person to me."

18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

*Jesus scolded the devil, who left the person; the child got better right away.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

*Then, the disciples went to Jesus alone and asked, "Why couldn't we make him leave?"

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

*Jesus told them, "Because you don't believe. Truly I say, if you have even a tiny bit of faith like a mustard seed, you can tell that big mountain to move to another place. It will move, and you can do anything."

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

*However, this type of problem can only be solved through praying and not eating.

22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:

*While they were in Galilee, Jesus told them that the Son of Man will be handed over to people.

23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

*They will murder him, but on the third day, he will come back to life. Everyone was extremely sad about it.

24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

*When they arrived in Capernaum, the people who paid taxes approached Peter and asked, "Doesn't your leader pay taxes?"

25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

*Jesus asked Simon, "Do you know who the kings collect taxes from - their own children or people from other places?"

26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.

*Peter asks, "About non-believers?" Jesus replies, "Then the children don't have to pay."

27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

*Even so, to avoid upsetting them, you go to the sea, catch a fish using a hook, and take the first one that comes up. Open its mouth, find some money inside, take it, and give it to them on behalf of both of us.
