1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

*Be careful not to give gifts just to show off; otherwise, you won't get praise from God in heaven.

2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

*So when giving charity, don't make a big show about it like those who seek attention. They get noticed by people, but I tell you this - they've already received their reward.

3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

*But when you give to others, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

*So that your giving is private: and your Father, who sees what's hidden, will publicly reward you for it.

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

*When you pray, don't be like the pretenders. They enjoy showing off by praying in public places so people can see them. I tell you truly, they already get what they want.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

*But you, when you pray, go to a private place, and once the door is closed, talk to your invisible Father in a quiet space. He will see your prayer in secret and publicly reward you for it.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

*When you pray, don't say things over and over; the non-believers do this thinking it will make them heard better.

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

*Don't be like them; your Father knows what you need even before you ask.

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

*In this way, then, pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

*Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, just like in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

*Give us today the food we need for now.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

*And forgive the money we owe, just like we forgive those who owe us money.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

*And don't let us fall into temptation, but protect us from bad things: Because yours is the kingdom, the power, and the greatness, forever. Yes.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

*If you forgive others' mistakes, then your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

*But if you don't forgive people's mistakes, your Father won't forgive your mistakes either.

16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

*In addition, when you fast, don't be like the fake people who look sad. They change their appearance to show others they are fasting. I tell you truly, they already get their reward.

17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

*But when you hurry, put oil on your head and wash your face.

18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

*So that others don't know you're fasting, do it for your hidden Father in private. He will publicly reward you for it.

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

*Don't store up treasures on Earth, because they can be ruined by insects, rust, and stolen by thieves.

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

*Save treasures in heaven, a place untouched by decay or theft.

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

*Where you value things most, your heart will be the same way.

22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

*The light comes from the eye, so if your eye focuses on one thing, your entire body will be filled with light.

23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

*But if your eye does bad things, your whole body will be filled with darkness. So if the light inside you is actually darkness, how big that darkness is!

24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

*You can't serve two lords: you'll either dislike one and love the other, or support one while disliking the other. You can't serve both God and wealth.

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

*So, I'm telling you not to worry about food, drinks, or clothes. Is your life just about eating, and your body only about wearing clothes?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

*Look at the birds in the sky: they don't plant seeds, harvest crops, or store food in barns, but God still takes care of them. Aren't you even more valuable to your Father in heaven?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

*Which of you, by thinking about it, can make themselves one cubit taller?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

*And why worry about clothes? Look at the field flowers, how they grow; they don't work, nor do they make clothes.

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

*And still, I tell you, no one, not even Solomon at his most glorious, was as beautifully dressed as these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

*Because God takes care of the plants that only last a day, will he not take even better care of you who doubt?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

*So don't worry about what to eat, drink, or wear. ---

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

*Gentiles look for these things, but your heavenly Father knows you need them.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

*But look for God's kingdom and his fairness first; then everything else will be given to you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

*Don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about its own problems. There's enough trouble in each day as it comes.
