Chapter 5

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
*Seeing the large crowd, Jesus went up a hill. When he sat down, his disciples came to him.
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
*He spoke and taught them.
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
*Blessed are those who don't think they are important; they will have a special place in heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
*Blessed are those who are sad: because they will feel better.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
*Blessings to those who are gentle and humble: they will own the world.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
*Blessed are those who want to do what is right and seek justice; they will be satisfied.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
*Blessed are those who show kindness: they will receive kindness in return.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
*Blessed are those with clean hearts, for they will get to see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
*Blessed are those who make peace, because they will be called God's children.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
*Blessed are those who face trouble for doing what's right; they will have a place in heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
*Blessed are you when people insult and hurt you because of me, saying terrible things that aren't true.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
*Be happy and very joyful because you will receive a big reward in heaven. This is because those who spoke for God before you also faced persecution.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
*You are like salt that makes things taste better on Earth. But if salt loses its flavor, it's no longer useful and gets thrown away to be stepped on by people.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
*You are the light in the world. A city on a hill can't be hidden.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
*People don't light a candle to hide it under a large container, but rather on a holder. The candle then shines for everyone in the room.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
*Shine your light for people to see your good actions, so they praise your Father in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
*Don't think I came to eliminate the law or prophets; I didn't come to eliminate, but to complete them.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
*I truly tell you, until the sky and the ground completely change, not even the smallest letter or dot will disappear from the laws, until everything is accomplished.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
*Whoever breaks a small commandment and teaches others to do the same will be called least in God's kingdom. But whoever follows and teaches these commands will be called great in God's kingdom.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
*I tell you that unless your goodness is greater than that of the religious teachers and strict followers, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
*You've been taught that it was said long ago, "Do not kill"; and anyone who kills will face possible punishment.
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
*But I tell you that if someone is angry with their brother without reason, they are in danger of judgment. If someone calls their brother "Raca," they are also in danger of the council. And if someone calls someone "fool," they are in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
*So if you take your gift to the altar, and then remember that your brother has a problem with you;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
*Leave your offering at the altar and go away; first make up with your brother, then return and offer your gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
*Agree with your opponent quickly while you are together; otherwise, your opponent might take you to court, and the judge might send you to a police officer, and you could end up in jail.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
*I truly tell you, you will not leave until you have paid every single penny.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
*You have been taught that long ago they said, "Do not cheat on your partner."
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
*I tell you that if someone looks at a woman with lustful thoughts, they have already committed adultery in their heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
*If your right eye causes you to sin, remove it and throw it away. It's better for you to lose a part of your body than for your entire body to be thrown into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
*If your right hand leads you wrong, remove it and don't use it; it's better for you to lose a part than for your entire being to be thrown into eternal punishment.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
*It has been said that if someone ends their marriage, they should give their spouse a divorce document.
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
*But I tell you this: anyone who ends their marriage, except for serious reasons, causes their spouse to commit adultery. And whoever marries someone who has been divorced also commits adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
*You've heard before that people said you shouldn't lie, especially when making promises to God, and you should keep your promises to Him.
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
*But I tell you, don't swear at all; not even by heaven, because it's where God sits on His throne.
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
*Not by the ground, as it's his footrest; not by Jerusalem, as it's the city of the big ruler.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
*Do not swear by your head, as you cannot change a hair's color.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
*But say only "yes" when you mean it, and "no" when you don't. Don't go beyond these two things, because anything more than that comes from badness.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
*You have been taught that the rule is to give the same as you receive - if someone hurts your eye, you can hurt theirs, or if they break your tooth, you can break theirs.
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
*But I tell you, don't fight against bad things. If someone hits your right cheek, let them hit your left one too.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
*If someone takes you to court and takes your coat, give them your cloak too.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
*If someone forces you to walk a mile, walk two miles with them.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
*Give to those who ask you, and don't refuse money to those who want to borrow from you.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
*You have been taught to be told, you should love your neighbor and dislike your enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
*But I tell you, love those who oppose you, bless the ones who say bad things about you, help those who don't like you, and pray for people who treat you badly or harass you.
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
*So that you can be like the other kids who have a dad in heaven, because he shines the sun on both bad and good people, and sends rain to both those who do right and those who don't.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
*If you only love those who love you, what reward is there? Even publicans (unpopular people) do the same thing.
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
*If you greet just your family members, what's so special about that? Even tax collectors do the same thing.
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
*Be completely good, just like the perfect Father in heaven.
