Matthew 13

The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

On that day, Jesus left the house and sat by the water.

And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

Many people came to see him, so he got into a boat and sat. Everyone stood on the shore.

And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;

He talked to them using stories, saying, Look, a farmer went out to plant seeds.

And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

When he planted seeds, some fell by the side of the road, and birds ate them all.

Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:

Some grew on rocky ground, with little soil; and immediately they grew big since there was not much soil to hold them back.

And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

When the sun came out, they got burned and since they had no foundation, they dried up and died.

And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

Some fell among thorns, which grew and strangled them.

But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

But some landed on good soil, and grew fruit, with some producing a hundred times as much, others sixty times, and still others thirty times.

Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Whoever can listen, please do.

And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

The disciples arrived and asked Jesus, "Why do you talk to them using stories?"

He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

He replied, "It's because you are meant to understand the secrets of heaven's kingdom, but they don't get to."

For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

For those who have, they will be given more; they'll have plenty. But for those who don't have, what they have will be taken away.

Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

So, I talk to them using stories: because when they look, they don't really see; when they listen, they don't truly hear, and they don't understand.

And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

In these events, the prophecy from Isaiah is fulfilled. It says that even when you listen, you won't understand, and when you look, you won't notice anything.

For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

This means that the people's hearts have become dull, their ears can't hear well, and they've closed their eyes. This is so they won't see or hear anything and understand it with their hearts. If they did, they might change and get better, and I could heal them.

But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

But happy are your eyes, because they can see; and your ears, because they can hear.

For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Truly I tell you, many prophets and good people wanted to see the things you see, but didn't. Also, they wished to hear what you hear, but didn't get to.

Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

Listen, then, to the story of the seed-planter.

When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

When someone hears the kingdom message but doesn't understand it, the evil one comes and takes away what was planted in their heart. This is the person who received the seed by the roadside.

But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

But the one who got the seed in rocky spots is the person who hears the message and quickly receives it with happiness.

Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

He doesn't have strong foundations, only lasting for a short time. When difficulties or persecution happen because of the word, he gets easily offended soon after.

He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

The person who gets the seed among thorns is someone who hears the word, but worldly worries and the allure of wealth smother the message, making them unproductive.

But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

But the one who got the seed in good soil is the person who hears the message, understands it. This person produces fruit and yields a harvest, with some getting 100 times as much, others 60 or 30 times as much.

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

Jesus told another story to the people: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who planted good seeds in his field.

But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

But when men were asleep, his opponent secretly planted weeds among the good crops and left.

But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

But when the wheat grew and produced grain, the weeds became visible too.

So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

So the house owner's workers asked him, "Sir, didn't you plant good seeds in your field? Where did the weeds come from?"

He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

He told them, "An enemy did this." The servants asked, "Do you want us to collect them?"

But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

But he said, "No, don't do that. You might accidentally destroy the good wheat along with the bad weeds."

Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Let them both grow side by side until it's time to harvest. When the harvest comes, I'll tell the people gathering the crops to first collect the unwanted plants and bundle them for burning. But they should gather the good plants (wheat) and store them in my storage place (barn).

Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

Jesus told another story: The kingdom of heaven is like a tiny mustard seed a man planted in his garden.

Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

This verse means that the mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds, but when it grows, it becomes a large tree where birds can make their homes.

Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

Jesus told another story: The kingdom of heaven is like yeast a woman mixed into flour. She hid it in three portions until all the dough rose.

All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

Jesus spoke to the large crowd using parables, and he didn't say anything without using a parable.

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

This was done to fulfill what the prophet said: "I will explain mysteries hidden since the world began, using stories that can be hard to understand."

Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

Then, Jesus dismissed the crowd and entered the house. After that, his followers came to him and asked him to explain the meaning of the story about the weeds in the field.

He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

He replied, saying, The one who plants the good seeds is the Son of man.

The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

The field represents the world, with the good seeds being the kids from the kingdom, while the tares are the offspring of the evil one.

The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

The one causing the trouble is the devil; the result is the end of the world; and those collecting it are angels.

As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

Just like how weeds are collected and burned, that's how things will be at the end of the world.

The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

The Son of Man will have his angels collect everyone from his kingdom who causes problems and those who do wrong.

And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

They will throw them into a fiery place, where there will be crying and teeth grinding.

Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Then, the good people will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. If you can hear, listen.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

The kingdom of heaven is like a hidden treasure in a field. When someone finds it, they hide the treasure and, filled with joy, sell everything they have to buy the field where the treasure is.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:

The kingdom of heaven is like a smart businessman looking for valuable pearls.

Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

When someone found an expensive pearl, they sold everything they owned to buy it.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:

The kingdom of heaven is like a fishing net catching all kinds of fish in the sea.

Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

When it was filled, they brought it to land, sat down, and put the good fish in containers, but threw away the bad ones.

So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

At the end of the world, angels will appear and separate the bad people from the good ones.

And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

And they will throw them into a fiery pit: there will be crying and teeth grinding.

Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.

Jesus asks them if they understand everything, and they reply, "Yes, Lord."

Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

Then he told them, So any teacher taught about the kingdom of heaven is like a person who owns a house. This person brings out both new and old treasures from their storage.

And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.

Then, after Jesus finished telling these stories, he left that place.

And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

When he arrived in his hometown, he taught at the synagogue, so much so that they were amazed and asked, "Where did this man get his wisdom and powerful deeds?"

Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

Isn't he the son of the carpenter? Isn't his mom named Mary? And his siblings are James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?

And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

And his sisters, aren't they with us? So, where did this man get all these things?

And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

They became upset with him. But Jesus told them, "A prophet isn't respected everywhere, except in their own hometown and home."

And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

He couldn't do many great miracles there because they didn't believe.
