Chapter 64

1 Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,

*Oh, please tear open the sky, and come down, so that the mountains can pour out like water when you're near.

2 As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!

*When fire melts and burns, it makes water boil. This shows your name to those who oppose you, causing nations to fear your presence.

3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.

*When you did really bad stuff we didn't expect, you arrived, and the mountains melted in your presence.

4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

*From the start of the world, people haven't heard or understood without your help, and no one has seen with their eyes, God, what you have planned for those who patiently wait for you.

5 Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.

*You find and help those who are happy and do what is right, remembering you in their actions. They know they have sinned, so they ask for forgiveness. Those who keep going on this path will be saved.

6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

*But we are all impure, and our good actions are like dirty rags. We all fade like leaves, and our sins, like the wind, carry us away.

7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

*No one calls on you for help because they don't try to get close to you. You've hidden from us, causing us to suffer due to our wrongdoings.

8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

*Now, Lord, you are our Father; we are like clay, and you are the one who shapes us; everything we are comes from your hands.

9 Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

*Don't get too angry, Lord. Please don't remember our wrongdoings forever. We, your people, are asking for your mercy and forgiveness.

10 Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

*Your sacred cities are now empty, Zion is like an empty land, Jerusalem is abandoned.

11 Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.

*Our sacred and lovely home, where our ancestors worshiped you, has been destroyed by fire. Everything nice we had is now gone.

12 Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O LORD? wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore?

*Will you stop doing these things, Lord? Will you be silent and cause us great pain?
