Chapter 54

1 Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.

*"Sing, woman, who has not given birth; shout joyfully and cry out, you who have not gone through labor pains. For there will be more children for the unmarried woman than for the married one," says the Lord.

2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;

*Expand your living space and extend the coverings of your home. Don't hold back, make your ropes longer and your supports stronger.

3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

*For you will expand to the right and left, and your descendants will inherit non-Jewish people, making empty cities home again.

4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.

*Don't be afraid, because you won't be embarrassed. You won't feel confused either, since you won't be ashamed. You'll forget the embarrassment from your past, and won't remember the disgrace of being a widow anymore.

5 For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

*Your Creator is your husband; He is called the Lord of Armies; He is also your Savior, the Holy One of Israel; And He will be known as the God of all the earth.

6 For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.

*The LORD has called you like a forgotten and sad woman, and a young wife when you were rejected, says your God.

7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

*For a short time, I left you; but soon, I'll show you great kindness by bringing you back.

8 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.

*In a small anger, I temporarily hid my presence from you. But forever, I will show you kindness and have mercy, says your eternal savior.

9 For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee.

*This verse means that just like how God promised never to flood the Earth again like in Noah's time, He also promises not to be angry or scold you.

10 For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.

*The mountains and hills will change, but my love for you won't go away, nor will my promise of peace be taken away, says the Lord who is kind to you.

11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.

*To you who are suffering and struggling in a storm, without comfort, know that I will beautify your stones with lovely colors and build your foundation with precious sapphires.

12 And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.

*I will make your windows from colorful gemstones and your gates from shiny black stones, with all your edges lined with pretty stones.

13 And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

*All your kids will learn from the Lord, and their peace will be huge.

14 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.

*You will be strong in doing what is right. You won't experience unfair treatment because you won't be afraid. Also, you won't have to worry about being scared, as nothing bad will come close to you.

15 Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.

*Look, they will come together, but not with my help. Anyone who comes against you will fail because of you.

16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.

*Look, I made the blacksmith who heats the coal in the fire and makes tools for their job, and I also made the one who destroys things.

17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

*No weapon made to harm you will succeed; and you will defeat any accusation made against you. This is the special inheritance of those who serve the LORD, and their justice comes from him, says the LORD.
