Chapter 16

1 Send ye the lamb to the ruler of the land from Sela to the wilderness, unto the mount of the daughter of Zion.

*Send the lamb to the land's leader, from Sela to the wilderness, to the mountain of Zion's daughter.

2 For it shall be, that, as a wandering bird cast out of the nest, so the daughters of Moab shall be at the fords of Arnon.

*It means that just like a bird without a home, the daughters of Moab will be like refugees at the Arnon river crossings.

3 Take counsel, execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; bewray not him that wandereth.

*Give advice and make decisions; make your shadow like the night during the day; hide those who are rejected; don't betray the one who is lost.

4 Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a covert to them from the face of the spoiler: for the extortioner is at an end, the spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.

*Let those who are rejected live with you, Moab. Be a place of safety for them from those who want to destroy. The unfair person is no longer, the destroyer has stopped, and the cruel people have been destroyed from the land.

5 And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.

*The throne will be built with kindness. He will sit on it honestly in David's home, making fair decisions, looking for justice, and quickly bringing fairness.

6 We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.

*We know about Moab's pride; he is very arrogant. He boasts about his greatness and anger, but his deceit won't last.

7 Therefore shall Moab howl for Moab, every one shall howl: for the foundations of Kirhareseth shall ye mourn; surely they are stricken.

*So Moab will cry out in sorrow, everyone will join in the crying. They will grieve for the city of Kirhareseth's ruins because they have been destroyed.

8 For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.

*The fields in Heshbon are withering and the vine of Sibmah is destroyed. Foreign leaders have destroyed their main plants. They went to Jazer, wandering through the desert. Its branches spread far, reaching across the sea.

9 Therefore I will bewail with the weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water thee with my tears, O Heshbon, and Elealeh: for the shouting for thy summer fruits and for thy harvest is fallen.

*So, I will mourn for the loss of Jazer's vine and Sibmah's vine. I will cry so much that my tears water Heshbon and Elealeh. This is because the celebrations for your summer fruits and harvest have ended sadly.

10 And gladness is taken away, and joy out of the plentiful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be shouting: the treaders shall tread out no wine in their presses; I have made their vintage shouting to cease.

*Joy disappears from the abundant fields, and there's no more singing or shouting in the vineyards. Grape crushers won't make wine anymore, as I've stopped the festive celebrations.

11 Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kirharesh.

*Because my insides will feel like a harp for Moab, and my deepest emotions for Kirharesh.

12 And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.

*When Moab is tired at the top, he'll go to his holy place to pray, but he won't succeed.

13 This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning Moab since that time.

*This is what God said about Moab after that moment.

14 But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.

*But now, the Lord says, in three years, like a temporary worker's time, and Moab's glory will be disrespected along with its large crowd. Only a tiny, weak group will remain.
