Prophecies about judgment and salvation, promising hope and a savior.

Chapter 2

1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

*Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw a message about Judah and Jerusalem.

2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

*In the final days, God's special mountain home will be raised higher than other mountains and hills, and all people from different countries will come to visit it.

3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

*Many people will come and invite others to join them on a journey up to God's mountain, where they'll learn about His ways and follow His path. This teaching comes from Zion, and God's word is shared from Jerusalem.

4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

*He will rule over all the countries and scold many groups of people. They will change their swords into farming tools and their spears into gardening tools. Countries won't fight each other with swords anymore, and they won't learn how to fight anymore.

5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

*Jacob's family, come and let's walk in God's light together.

6 Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.

*So, you left your people, the family of Jacob, because they have grown from the east and act like the Philistines, who predict the future. They also enjoy the company of non-family members' kids.

7 Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:

*Their country has lots of silver and gold, with no limit to their riches. It's also filled with horses and endless chariots.

8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:

*Their land has many idols; they worship things they made themselves with their hands.

9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.

*The average person bows down and the important person humbles themselves; still, don't forgive them.

10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.

*Go inside a rock and hide in the dirt to avoid God's power and to respect his greatness.

11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

*People's pride will be lowered, and proud people will bend, only the LORD will be raised up on that day.

12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

*The day when God shows His power will affect those who are proud and arrogant, and they will be humbled.

13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

*On all the tall cedar trees of Lebanon and on all the tall oak trees of Bashan.

14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

*On all tall mountains and on all raised-up hills.

15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,

*On all tall towers and enclosed walls,

16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

*On all the ships of Tarshish and on every nice picture.

17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

*In simpler terms, this verse means: People's pride will be humbled, and everyone will be brought lower. Only the LORD will be glorified on that day.

18 And the idols he shall utterly abolish.

*He will completely destroy the idols.

19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

*They will hide in rock crevices and underground caves because they are afraid of God's great power and majesty when He suddenly shakes the earth violently.

20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

*On that day, people will throw away their silver and gold statues, which they made to worship, to the moles and bats.

21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

*Go hide in rock crannies and on jagged cliff tops, out of fear for the LORD and to see his great glory, as he suddenly shakes the earth powerfully.

22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of ?

*Stop looking at people, because their life only comes from their nose; what can they really be considered valuable for?
