Prophecies about judgment and salvation, promising hope and a savior.

Chapter 3

1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water.

*"See, the Lord, the ruler of all, removes from Jerusalem and Judah the support and the walking stick, providing no more food and no more water."

2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,

*The strong warrior, the battle hero, the judge, and the prophet, the wise and experienced, and the elderly.

3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.

*The leader of fifty, the respected person, the wise advisor, the skilled creator, and the talented speaker.

4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

*I will make kids into leaders, and little ones will be in charge.

5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

*People will be mistreated by each other and by their neighbors. Children will act proudly towards the elderly and the lowly will treat the respected poorly.

6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:

*When a man chooses his family member to lead them, he asks him to become their leader, and to manage their problems, entrusting the solution to their troubles to him.

7 In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.

*On that day, they will promise not to heal others because they don't have food or clothes at home. They don't want to lead people.

8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

*Jerusalem is destroyed and Judah has fallen down because they speak against God and do things that make His greatness angry.

9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

*Their appearance testifies against them; they openly show their sinfulness like Sodom, hiding nothing. Oh, how unfortunate their souls are! They have brought harm upon themselves.

10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

*Tell the good people that everything will be fine, because they'll enjoy the results of their actions.

11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

*Oh no, for the bad people! They will suffer because their actions will come back to them as consequences.

12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

*My people, kids mistreat them, and ladies control them. People leading you make you go wrong and ruin your path.

13 The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.

*The Lord stands to defend and stand to judge the people.

14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

*God will judge the leaders of his people, along with those in charge, because you have taken over the vineyard and kept the wealth from the poor people in your homes.

15 What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

*What do you mean for hurting my people so badly and making life hard for the poor? asks the Lord, the powerful God.

16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

*Moreover, the Lord says that the women in Zion are proud. They walk with their heads held high and their eyes flirting. They sway and make noise with their footsteps as they walk.

17 Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.

*So, God will cause a skin disease on the heads of the women in Zion and reveal their hidden areas.

18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,

*On that day, the Lord will remove the confidence in their ankle bracelets and their wheel-like armor, as well as their round tire-like shields resembling the moon.

19 The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

*The chains, bracelets, and mufflers.

20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,

*The hats, leg decorations, headbands, tablets, and earrings.

21 The rings, and nose jewels,

*The earrings and nose rings,

22 The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,

*The changing clothes, capes, head coverings, and clothing pins.

23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.

*The glasses, fancy clothes, hoods, and coverings.

24 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.

*Then, instead of good smells, there will be bad ones. Instead of a waist belt, a tear. Instead of neat hair, baldness. Instead of an attractive decoration, a cloth made from coarse material. And instead of beauty, getting burned.

25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

*Your soldiers will be defeated by swords, and your strong fighters in battles.

26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

*The city's gates will be sad and cry; it will be empty and sit on the ground.
