Chapter 21

1 The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.

*The message about the desert by the sea. Like strong winds from the south, it comes; from the desert, from a very scary place.

2 A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.

*A serious message comes to me: The deceitful person is being untrustworthy, and the destroyer is destroying. You, Elam, rise up! Attack, Media! I've stopped all their sadness.

3 Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

*So, my insides hurt a lot because of intense pain, like a pregnant woman's labor pains. When I heard about it, I became bent over with distress, and when I saw it, I was deeply troubled.

4 My heart panted, fearfulness affrighted me: the night of my pleasure hath he turned into fear unto me.

*My heart raced, fear made me scared: the night that was supposed to be fun turned into fear for me.

5 Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield.

*Set up the table, look out from the tower, eat and drink: kings, stand up and put oil on your armor.

6 For thus hath the LORD said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth.

*So, the Lord told me to put a watchman in place and have him report what he sees.

7 And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:

*He saw a chariot with riders, a donkey chariot, and a camel chariot. He listened very carefully.

8 And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:

*He shouted, "A lion!" My lord, I always stay on the lookout during the day and keep guard all night long.

9 And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.

*And look, a group of people in a chariot comes, along with two horse riders. He replied, "Babylon has fallen; it has fallen completely. All the statues of her gods have been smashed to pieces on the ground."

10 O my threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

*O my dear people, and the food we eat: what I've learned from the powerful Lord, the God of Israel, I've shared with you.

11 The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?

*The message about Dumah. Someone is calling from Seir, Watchman, what's happening at night? Watchman, what's happening at night?

12 The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.

*The watchman spoke, "Morning is coming, and so is night. If you want to know something, ask! Come back, return."

13 The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim.

*The responsibility for Arabia. In the Arabian woods, you will stay, traveling groups of Dedanim.

14 The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled.

*The people from the land of Tema gave water to the thirsty person and shared their food with someone running away.

15 For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.

*They ran away from the swords, the pulled-out swords, and the curved bows, and from how terrible war is.

16 For thus hath the LORD said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail:

*So the Lord told me, "In about a year, like how a temporary worker's time goes by, and Kedar's greatness will fade away."

17 And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.

*The remaining group of arrow-using strong warriors from the descendants of Kedar will decrease, because the Lord God of Israel has said so.
