Chapter 53

1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

*Who has trusted our message? And to whom does God's power become clear?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

*He will develop like a delicate plant from dry soil, having no special shape or attractiveness. When we see him, there's nothing beautiful about him that we would want.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

*He is disliked and ignored by people; a sad man who knows about suffering; we turned away from him; he was disrespected, and we didn't value him.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

*He definitely took on our pains and carried our sadnesses. But we thought he was punished by God and suffering.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

*But he got hurt for our mistakes, he got hurt for our bad actions: the punishment for making things peaceful was given to him; and from his wounds, we get better.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

*All of us, like sheep, have strayed; each person has gone their own way. God has placed upon himself the wrongdoing of all of us.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

*He faced mistreatment and suffering but didn't say anything. Like a lamb being led to slaughter or a sheep in front of shearers, he remained silent.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

*He was freed from jail and judgement, and who can explain his origins? He was removed from the world of the living because he suffered for my people's sins.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

*He was buried with bad people and wealthy ones when he died. This happened even though he didn't hurt anyone and told no lies.

10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

*Even though it made God sad to punish him, He did it because it was part of His plan. When this person's life is used to forgive others' mistakes, God will bless him with many good things, including a long life and happy children. And everything will go well for him as God intended.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

*He will witness the results of his hard work and be content. Through his understanding, my righteous servant will justify numerous people; as he will carry their wrongdoings.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

*So, he will be given a share with the powerful, and he will divide the loot with the strong. This is because he gave his life completely: He was considered with those who broke rules, carried the sins of many, and prayed for those who broke rules.
