Chapter 26

1 In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

*On that day, this song will be sung in Judah: We have a powerful city; God will provide safety for our walls and defenses.

2 Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.

*Open the doors so that the righteous people who follow the truth can come inside.

3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

*You will give him true peace, someone who focuses only on you, because they believe in you completely.

4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

*Put your trust in the LORD forever, because the LORD Jehovah provides endless strength.

5 For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

*He lowers those who live high up; the tall city, he makes it small; he makes it very small, almost touching the ground; he brings it down to the dirt.

6 The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

*The poor and needy will step on it, pressing it down with their feet.

7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

*The righteous path means being fair: you, who are very fair, measure the way for those who do what's right.

8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

*Yes, we have waited for you, Lord, following your judgments. Our souls long for your name and remembering you.

9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

*I really want to be with you at night, and I'll look for you in the morning too. Because when your rules are on Earth, everyone will learn to do what is right.

10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.

*Show kindness to those who do wrong, but they won't learn to do what is right. In a land where people are honest, they will act unfairly and won't see the greatness of God.

11 LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.

*LORD, when you raise your hand, they won't see it. But they will see and feel embarrassed because of their jealousy towards your people. Yes, the fire from your enemies will destroy them.

12 LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

*GOD, you will create peace for us because you have done everything within us.

13 O LORD our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.

*Dear GOD, we've followed other leaders, but we will only praise your name, GOD.

14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

*They won't come back to life; they're gone forever. You've punished them and erased all memories of them.

15 Thou hast increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.

*You have grown the people, Lord, you have grown the people: you are honored: you led them far to all parts of the world.

16 LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

*LORD, when they faced difficulties, they sought your help. They prayed to you during your punishment.

17 Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.

*Just like a pregnant woman close to giving birth, who is in pain and cries out during her contractions, we have also suffered in your presence, Lord.

18 We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.

*We experienced pregnancy and pain, it feels like we gave birth to wind; we haven't saved anyone on Earth, and people around the world haven't fallen.

19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

*Your deceased people will come back to life, along with my dead body. Wake up and sing, those who live in the dust. Your dew is like plant dew, and the earth will make the dead come back to life.

20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

*Come, my people, go to your safe places and close the doors behind you. Hide there for a short time until the anger has passed.

21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

*See, the Lord is coming from his place to punish people for their wrongdoings. The earth will reveal the bloodshed and won't hide the dead anymore.
