Chapter 59

1 Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

*Look, God's power is not limited, so He can save. His hearing isn't dull, so He can listen.

2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

*But your wrongdoings have created a distance between you and God, and your sins have covered His sight from you, so He won't listen.

3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

*Your hands are dirty with blood and your fingers with wrongdoing; you've told lies with your lips and your tongue has spoken twisted things.

4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

*No one calls for fairness or tells the truth. They rely on empty things and lie. They create trouble and give birth to wrongdoing.

5 They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

*They lay dangerous eggs and make spider webs. Eating their eggs is deadly, and when crushed, they turn into venomous snakes.

6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

*Their spider webs won't be like clothes; they can't hide with what they do. What they do is bad, and they use violence.

7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

*They quickly do bad things and hurry to hurt innocent people. They think about doing wrong things. They leave destruction and waste wherever they go.

8 The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

*They don't understand peace and have no judgement in their actions, creating twisted paths. Anyone who follows these paths won't find peace.

9 Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.

*So, judgment is far away from us and justice doesn't come to our help. We wait for clarity, but only confusion appears; for brightness, but we walk in the dark.

10 We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.

*We feel our way along the wall like people who are blind, and we feel as if we can't see: we trip over things even in bright daylight like it's dark; we are in lonely places as if we are already deceased.

11 We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

*We act like loud bears and cry like gentle doves. We search for fairness and rescue, but neither is near us.

12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;

*Our wrongdoings pile up in front of God, and our sins speak against us. Our wrongs are always with us, and we are aware of our wicked actions.

13 In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

*When we disobey God, lie to Him, and move away from Him, we speak unfairness and rebellion. We think and say things that are not true from our hearts.

14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

*Judgment goes back and justice is far away; truth has fallen on the street and fairness can't come in.

15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

*Yes, truth fails; and the one who leaves evil makes himself an easy target; and the Lord saw this, and he was upset that there was no fairness.

16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

*He looked around and saw no one. He was amazed that there was no one to plead for them. So, he saved them with his strength and supported them with his fairness.

17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

*He wore righteousness like armor, salvation like a helmet, had revenge clothes, and zeal as a cloak.

18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.

*People will get what they deserve based on their actions. He will punish those who oppose him and reward his enemies. He will also give them what they deserve for their actions, especially to the islands.

19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

*People will respect God's name from the west and His greatness when the sun rises. When enemies attack like a huge wave, God's Spirit will protect us.

20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.

*The Savior will visit Zion and those who stop doing wrong in Jacob, says God.

21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.

*The Lord says, "I make a promise to them: My spirit with you and the words I gave you will always stay in your mouth, your children's mouth, and your grandchildren's mouth forever."
