Chapter 7

1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

*After that, Jesus walked in Galilee. He didn't walk in Jewish areas because the Jews wanted to kill him.

2 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.

*The Jewish holiday of booths was soon to begin.

3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

*So his brothers told him, "Go to Judaea now, so your followers can see the things you're doing there."

4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

*For nobody does anything secretly without wanting others to know. So if you're doing these things, make yourself visible to everyone.

5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.

*His brothers didn't believe in him either.

6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

*Then Jesus told them, "My time isn't here yet, but yours is always prepared."

7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

*The world doesn't dislike you, but it dislikes me because I say it does bad things.

8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.

*Go to the celebration: I haven't gone to the celebration yet: because my time isn't completely here yet.

9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

*After saying these words, he stayed in Galilee for a while longer.

10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

*But when his brothers left for the festival, he too went, not openly, but secretly.

11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

*Then, during the festival, the Jews looked for him and asked, "Where is he?"

12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

*There was a lot of complaining among the people about him. Some thought he was a good person, but others said he was tricking the people.

13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

*However, nobody openly talked about him because they were afraid of what the Jews might do.

14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

*During the feast, Jesus went to the temple and began to teach.

15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

*The Jews were amazed and asked, "How does this man know how to read and write if he hasn't been taught?"

16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

*Jesus replied, saying, My teaching isn't from me, but from the one who sent me.

17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

*If someone does what is right, they will understand the teaching. It doesn't matter if it's from God or just my own thoughts.

18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

*If someone talks about themselves, they want to be praised; but if someone seeks praise from the one who sent them, they are genuine and not dishonest.

19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

*Did Moses not give you the law, and still no one follows it? Why do you want to kill me?

20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

*The people replied, "You have a demon that wants to harm you; why do you let it?"

21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

*Jesus replied, "I did one thing, and you all are amazed."

22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

*Moses taught you to practice circumcision; not because it comes from Moses, but from the earlier generations; and you perform this on the Sabbath day.

23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

*If someone gets circumcised on the Sabbath day to follow Moses' laws, and you're upset with me for healing a man completely on the Sabbath day?

24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

*Don't judge based on looks, but make fair judgments.

25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

*Then some from Jerusalem asked, "Isn't this the person they want to kill?"

26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

*But look, he speaks confidently, and they don't say anything to him. Do the leaders really know that this is actually Christ?

27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

*However, we know where this person comes from, but when Christ returns, nobody will know his origin.

28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

*Then Jesus spoke in the temple while teaching, "You all know who I am and where I'm from. I didn't come on my own, but the one who sent me is genuine, and you don't know him."

29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

*But I recognize him: because I come from him, and he has sent me.

30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

*Then they tried to grab him, but nobody touched him since it wasn't the right time yet.

31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

*Many people believed in him and asked, "When Jesus returns, will he perform even greater miracles than the ones this man has done?"

32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

*The Pharisees and leaders overheard people complaining about Jesus, so they sent guards to capture him.

33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

*Then Jesus told them, "I'll be with you just a bit longer, and then I must return to the one who sent me."

34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

*You will look for me but won't find me, and you can't go where I am.

35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

*Then the Jews talked among themselves, asking, "Where will he go so we can't find him? Will he go to the scattered Gentiles and teach the Gentiles?"

36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

*What does it mean when he says, "You will look for me but won't find me, and you can't go where I am"?

37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

*On the final day of the big festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, "If anyone is thirsty, come to me and drink."

38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

*Whoever believes in me, like the Bible says, will have rivers of living water coming from their insides.

39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

*He talked about the Spirit, which those who trust in him would get. The Holy Spirit hadn't been given yet because Jesus wasn't glorified yet.

40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.

*So, after hearing this message, many people thought, "This person is truly a Prophet."

41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

*Others claimed, "This is the Messiah." However, others questioned, "Can the Messiah come from Galilee?"

42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

*Didn't the Bible say that Christ comes from David's family and the town of Bethlehem, which is where David was from?

43 So there was a division among the people because of him.

*People argued due to him, causing a split.

44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

*Some wanted to capture him, but nobody actually touched him.

45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

*Then the officers went to the chief priests and Pharisees and asked, "Why didn't you bring him?"

46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

*The officers replied, No one has ever spoken like this man before.

47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

*Then, the Pharisees replied, "Are you all being misled too?"

48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

*Did any leaders or Pharisees believe in him?

49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

*But those who don't know the law are cursed.

50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

*Nicodemus asks them, (the one who visited Jesus at night and was part of their group,)

51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

*Does our law judge anyone before listening to them and knowing what they do?

52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

*They asked, "Are you from Galilee too?" They searched and found that no prophets come from Galilee.

53 And every man went unto his own house.

*Every person returned to their home.
