1 When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

*So when the LORD understood that the Pharisees heard about Jesus making and baptizing more followers than John,

2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

*Even though Jesus didn't personally perform baptisms, his followers did.

3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

*He went away from Judaea and returned to Galilee once more.

4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

*He had to pass through Samaria.

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

*Then he goes to a city called Sychar in Samaria, close to the land Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

*Jacob's well was the place. Tired from his trip, Jesus sat by the well around noon.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

*A woman from Samaria comes to get water; Jesus asks her to give him a drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

*While his followers went to the city to buy food, (John 21:3).

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

*The woman from Samaria asks Jesus, "Why do you, as a Jew, ask me for a drink, since I'm a Samaritan woman, and Jews don't interact with Samaritans?"

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

*Jesus replied, "If you knew God's gift and who I am, asking me for a drink, you would have requested it yourself, and I would have given you water that gives life."

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

*The woman asks him, "Sir, you don't have anything to pull water with, and the well is very deep. Where do you get this living water?"

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

*Are you greater than our father Jacob, who provided us with the well and drank from it himself, along with his children and his animals?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

*Jesus replied, "Whoever drinks from this water will be thirsty again."

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

*But whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again. The water I give will make them a source of living water, leading to eternal life.

15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

*The woman asks him, "Sir, let me have this water so I'm not thirsty and don't need to come here to get it."

16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

*Jesus tells her, "Go get your husband and then come here."

17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

*The woman replied, "I don't have a husband." Jesus told her, "You're right, you don't have one."

18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

*You have been married to five men, and the man you are with now isn't your husband. You are speaking the truth about this.

19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

*The woman tells him, "Sir, I can tell you're a prophet."

20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

*Our ancestors prayed on this mountain, but you say that worship should happen in Jerusalem.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

*Jesus tells her, "Woman, trust me, a time will come when you won't worship the Father here or in Jerusalem."

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

*You worship something you don't understand: we know what we worship: for our salvation comes from the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

*But the time comes, and it's happening now, when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: because the Father looks for people like this to worship Him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

*God is a spiritual being. To worship Him, you must do so sincerely and genuinely.

25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

*The woman tells him, "I know the Messiah, who is also called Christ, is coming. When he arrives, he will teach us everything."

26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

*Jesus tells her, "I am the one talking to you; I am him."

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

*Then his disciples arrived and were surprised he was talking to the woman. None of them asked why he was speaking to her or what she wanted.

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

*The woman dropped her container, and went back to the city, telling the people there about it.

29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

*"Come, meet a man who knows everything about me; he says he is the Messiah - don't you think he is?"

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

*Then they left the city and went to see him.

31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

*In the meantime, his disciples asked him to eat, saying, "Master, please have something to eat."

32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

*But he told them, I have food that you don't know about.

33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

*So the disciples asked each other, "Did anyone bring something for him to eat?"

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

*Jesus tells them, "My goal is to do what the one who sent me wants, and to complete the task given to me."

35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

*Don't say it takes four more months for the harvest. I tell you now, look at the fields! They are ready for harvest already.

36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

*And the one who harvests gets paid and collects fruits for eternal life, so both the sower and the harvester can be happy together.

37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

*This means that it's true when people say, someone plants something, and someone else gets to harvest the results.

38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

*I sent you to gather from a place you didn't work: others worked hard, and you benefited from their efforts.

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

*Many people in the city trusted him because the woman said he knew everything she had done.

40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

*When the Samaritans reached him, they asked him to stay with them, so he stayed for two days.

41 And many more believed because of his own word;

*And lots of people believed what he said.

42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

*He told the woman, "Now we believe it! It's not just because you said so. We've heard him ourselves and know that he is truly the Christ, the savior of everyone in the world."

43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

*After two days, he left that place and went to Galilee.

44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

*Jesus said that prophets don't get respect in their hometown.

45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

*Then, when he arrived in Galilee, the people there welcomed him because they had witnessed everything he did at the festival in Jerusalem. They too had attended the festival.

46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

*Jesus returned to Cana of Galilee, where he turned water into wine. There, a wealthy man's son was ill in Capernaum.

47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.

*When he learned Jesus was in Galilee after being in Judaea, he went to him and asked him to come and heal his son, who was very close to dying.

48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

*Then Jesus told him, "Unless you see miracles and amazing things, you won't believe."

49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

*The important person asks, "Sir, please come quickly before my child passes away."

50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

*Jesus told the man, "Your son is alive. Go home." The man trusted what Jesus said and went away.

51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.

*As he went down, his servants came to him with good news: Your son is alive.

52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

*Then he asked them when he started getting better. They replied, "Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever disappeared from him."

53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

*So the father understood that at the exact time, when Jesus told him, "Your son is alive," he believed, as well as everyone in his home.

54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

*This is another miracle done by Jesus after he left Judaea and went to Galilee.
