Chapter 17

1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

*Jesus spoke these words, looked up at the sky, and said, "Father, it's time; show how great my son is so he can also make you look great."

2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

*Just like you have given him control over all living things, let him give eternal life to whoever you choose.

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

*This means everlasting life: knowing only the real God and Jesus Christ, who you sent.

4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

*I have honored you on Earth: I have completed the task you gave me to do.

5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

*And now, dear Father, please show how great I am using your own power and the same glory I had with you before the world began.

6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

*I've shown your name to the people you gave me from the world: they were yours, and you gave them to me; and they have followed your words.

7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

*Now they understand that everything you've given me comes from you.

8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

*I shared the messages you gave me, and they accepted them. They knew for sure that I came from you and believed you sent me.

9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

*I ask God to protect my people: I don't pray for everyone, but for those you have chosen for me, because they belong to you.

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

*And everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine; and I am honored through them.

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

*I'm not in the world anymore, but they are. I'm coming to you. Holy Father, protect those you gave me using your name, so they can be one like us.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

*While I was with my followers on Earth, I protected them using your name. The ones you gave me are safe, and none have gone astray, except the one who will bring destruction; this happened to fulfill a prophecy in the writings.

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

*I am coming to you, and I am saying this in the world so that they can experience my happiness within them.

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

*I've given them your message, and the world has disliked them since they don't belong to the world, just like I don't belong to the world.

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

*I don't want you to remove them from the world, but to protect them from bad things.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

*They don't belong to the world, just like I don't belong to the world.

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

*Set them apart using your truth, because your word is true.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

*Just as you sent me into the world, I have also sent them into the world.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

*So that they can be made holy, I make myself holy too, using the truth.

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

*I don't just pray for these people, but also for those who will believe in me because of what they say.

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

*"May everyone be one, just like you and me, Father, are together, so they can also be one with us. This way, the world will believe that you sent me."

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

*And the honor you gave to me, I passed on to them, so they can be united, just like how you and I are united.

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

*I am in them and you are in me so they can be completely united. This shows the world that you sent me and that you love them just as much as you love me.

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

*Dear Father, I want you to let those you've given me join me wherever I am. I want them to see the greatness you've given me because you loved me even before the world began.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

*Dear just and loving God, people don't really know you. But I do, and they see that you sent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

*I told them your name and will keep telling them. This way, the same love you have for me can be in them, and I can be in them too.
