Chapter 14

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

*Don't let your heart worry: you believe in God, so believe in me too.

2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

*In God's home, there are many rooms; if this wasn't true, I would tell you. I am going to make a space just for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

*If I ready a spot for you, I'll return and take you with me; so where I am, you can be too.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

*Wherever I go, you know, and the way is also known by you.

5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

*Thomas asks, "Lord, where are you going? We don't know the way."

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

*Jesus tells him, "I am the path, the truth, and the life. No one can reach the Father except through me."

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

*If you knew who I am, you would have known my Father too. Now, not only do you know Him, but you have seen Him as well.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

*Philip asks Jesus, "Show us the Father, and that's enough for us."

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

*Jesus asked Philip, "After all this time, don't you know who I am?" Anyone who sees me has seen God. So why do you ask to see God?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

*Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not from myself, but from the Father living inside me, who does the deeds.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

*Trust me that I am part of the Father, and the Father is part of me; or just believe in me because of the things I do.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

*Absolutely, truly, I tell you, anyone who believes in me will do the things I do, and even greater things than these. This is because I am going to my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

*Ask anything in my name, and I'll do it to bring glory to the Father through the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

*If you ask anything in my name, I will grant it.

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

*If you love me, follow my rules.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

*I will ask the Father to give you another helper, who will stay with you forever.

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

*Even the Spirit of truth, who the world can't accept because they don't see or understand him, you know him. He lives with you and will be inside you.

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

*I won't abandon you without comfort; I'll be there for you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

*In a short time, the world won't see me anymore, but you will. Since I am alive, you will also be alive.

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

*At that time, you will understand that I am part of my Father, and you are part of me, and I am part of you.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

*If you follow my rules, you show that you love me. If you love me, my Father will love you too, and I will reveal myself to you.

22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

*Judas asks Jesus, not calling himself Iscariot, "Lord, why do you reveal yourself to us but not to the rest of the world?"

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

*Jesus replied, "If someone loves me, they'll follow my teachings. My Father will then love them too, and we will be with them, living together."

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

*If someone doesn't love me, they won't follow my teachings. The words you hear are not from me, but from the Father who sent me.

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

*I've told you these things while I am still here with you.

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

*But the Comforter, who is the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything I've told you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

*I give you peace; not like the world's peace. Don't let your heart be worried or scared.

28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

*Jesus told them that he would leave and return. He also mentioned that if they truly loved him, they would be happy because he was going to his Father, who was even greater than him.

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.

*I already warned you about this before it happens, so when it actually happens, you can believe it's true.

30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

*From now on, I won't chat much with you, because the ruler of this world has arrived and has no power over me.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

*But to show the world my love for the Father, just like he told me to, that's what I do. Now, let's leave and go somewhere else.
