Chapter 11

1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

*A man named Lazarus from the town of Bethany, where Mary and her sister Martha lived, became ill.

2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

*Mary, who anointed the Lord's feet with oil and wiped them with her hair, had a brother named Lazarus, who was unwell.

3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

*So his sisters messaged him, "Lord, your beloved person is not well."

4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

*When Jesus learned about it, he stated, "This illness isn't meant to cause death, but to bring honor to God and show how great the Son of God is."

5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

*Now, Jesus cared deeply for Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.

6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

*After hearing he was ill, he stayed for two more days at the same location.

7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

*Then, he told his followers, "Let's go back to Judaea."

8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

*His followers asked him, "Teacher, the Jews recently wanted to throw stones at you. Why are you going there again?"

9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

*Jesus replied, "Aren't there 12 hours in a day? If someone walks during the day, they won't trip because they can see the sunlight."

10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

*But if a person walks at night, they might trip and fall, because they don't have any light with them.

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

*He said these words, and then he told them, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I am going to wake him up from his sleep."

12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

*Then his followers asked him, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will be fine."

13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

*However, Jesus talked about his death, but they thought he was talking about resting by sleeping.

14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

*Then, Jesus told them directly, "Lazarus has passed away."

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

*I'm happy I wasn't there so you can believe; still, we should go see him.

16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

*Then Thomas, also known as Didymus, told his other disciples, "Let's go too, so we can die with him."

17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

*When Jesus arrived, he discovered that the person had been in the tomb for four days already.

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

*Now Bethany was close to Jerusalem, only about 20 minutes walk away.

19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

*Many Jews visited Martha and Mary to console them about their sibling.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

*Then Martha quickly went to meet Jesus when she found out he was coming, but Mary stayed inside the house.

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

*Then Martha told Jesus, "Lord, if you were here, my brother wouldn't have died."

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

*But I know that right now, whatever you ask God for, God will give it to you.

23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

*Jesus tells her, "Your brother will come back to life."

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

*Martha tells Jesus, "I understand that he will come back to life on the final day of judgment."

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

*Jesus told her, "I am the one who brings people back to life, and the source of true living. Anyone who trusts in me can still have life, even if they've died."

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

*If you live and trust in me, you won't die. Do you believe this?

27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

*She tells him, "Yes, Lord. I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who was expected to arrive in the world."

28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

*After saying that, she left and secretly called Mary, her sister, to tell her that the Master has arrived and is calling for her.

29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

*As soon as she heard it, she got up fast and went to him.

30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

*Jesus hadn't reached the city yet; he was at the spot where Martha encountered him.

31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

*The people with Mary inside the house comforted her. When they saw Mary quickly stand up and leave, they followed her, believing she was going to a burial place to cry.

32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

*When Mary reached Jesus, saw him, and fell at his feet, she said, "Lord, if you were here, my brother wouldn't have died."

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

*When Jesus saw her and others crying, he sighed deeply and became distressed.

34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

*He asked, "Where is he placed?" They replied, "Come and see for yourself, Lord."

35 Jesus wept.

*Jesus cried.

36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

*Then the Jews said, Look, he really cared for him!

37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

*Some people asked, "Couldn't the person who gave sight to blind people also have stopped this man from dying?"

38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

*Jesus groaned and went to the tomb. It was a hole with a big rock covering it.

39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

*Jesus told them to remove the stone. Martha, who was the sister of the person who had died, said to him, "Lord, by now he smells bad because he has been dead for four days."

40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

*Jesus tells her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

*Then they removed the stone from where the person had died. And Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I'm grateful that you have listened to me."

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

*I understood that you can always hear me, but I still said those words in front of these people so they would think you sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

*Then after saying that, he shouted loudly, "Lazarus, come out!"

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

*The person who was dead got up, wrapped in burial clothes and with a cloth around his head. Jesus told them to untie him and let him go.

45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

*Then, many Jews who met Mary and saw what Jesus did, began to believe in him.

46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

*Some left to tell the Pharisees about Jesus' actions. ---

47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

*Then, the main religious leaders and the Pharisees had a meeting and asked, What should we do? because this man is doing many amazing things.

48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

*If we don't stop him, everyone will believe in him; then the Romans will take our land and people.

49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

*And one called Caiaphas, who was the top priest that year, told them, "You understand nothing at all."

50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

*Don't think it's good for one person to die so the rest can live; we don't want the entire country to be destroyed.

51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

*He said this not by himself, but as the high priest that year, he predicted that Jesus would die for that country.

52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

*And not just that country's people, but also to bring together the children of God who were spread out far away.

53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

*From that day, they decided together to plan his death.

54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

*Jesus stopped openly walking among the Jews and went to a city called Ephraim, close to the wilderness. There, he stayed with his followers.

55 And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

*The Jewish Passover was soon happening, so many people left the country and went to Jerusalem to cleanse themselves before the event.

56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

*Then they looked for Jesus and talked with each other while standing in the temple. They wondered, "What do you think? Will he really not go to the celebration?"

57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

*Now, the main priests and Pharisees ordered that anyone who knew Jesus' location should tell them, so they could arrest him.
