1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;

*In the time of Amraphel, king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of various countries, this happened.

2 That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.

*These kings fought against Bera, the king of Sodom, Birsha, the king of Gomorrah, Shinab, the king of Admah, Shemeber, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, also known as Zoar.

3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.

*All these places connected in the valley of Siddim, known as the salty sea.

4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

*For 12 years, they worked for Chedorlaomer, but in the 13th year, they decided to rebel.

5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,

*In the 14th year, Chedorlaomer and his allied kings attacked the Rephaims in a place called Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim.

6 And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.

*The Horites lived in Mount Seir up to Elparan, near the desert area.

7 And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

*So they went back and reached a place called Enmishpat, or Kadesh. There, they defeated the Amalekites and the Amorites living in Hazezontamar.

8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;

*The king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, and other kings went to fight against them in a place called the valley of Siddim.

9 With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.

*With King Chedorlaomer from Elam, King Tidal from various lands, King Amraphel from Shinar, and King Arioch from Ellasar; these four kings joined forces with five others.

10 And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.

*The valley of Siddim had lots of sticky pits; the kings from Sodom and Gomorrah ran away and fell in them; those who didn't escape ran to a nearby mountain.

11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.

*So they seized everything from Sodom and Gomorrah, including their food, and left.

12 And they took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

*They captured Lot, Abram's nephew living in Sodom, along with his possessions, and left.

13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.

*A person who escaped came to tell Abram, who lived near Mamre. Mamre was related to Eshcol and Aner, and they all had an agreement with Abram.

14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

*When Abram learned his brother was captured, he prepared 318 trained servants from his home and chased the captors to Dan.

15 And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

*He and his helpers attacked them at night and defeated them, chasing them all the way to Hobah, a place near Damascus to the left.

16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

*He returned with everything, got his brother Lot and Lot's belongings too, along with the women and the people.

17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.

*The king of Sodom came to meet Abram when he returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and other kings at a place called the Valley of Shaveh, also known as the king's valley.

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

*Melchizedek, king of Salem, gave bread and wine. He was also a priest for the highest God.

19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

*And he praised him, saying, "May Abram be greatly blessed by the almighty God, who owns both heaven and earth."

20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

*Praise the great God! He has defeated your opponents and given them to you. And he received 10% of everything from him.

21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

*The king of Sodom told Abram, "Give me the people, and keep the stuff for yourself."

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

*And Abram told the king of Sodom, "I promised God, the all-powerful creator of everything in heaven and on earth, that I won't take anything from you."

23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

*I won't take even a small piece of string or a shoelace from you, and I won't take anything that belongs to you. I don't want you to think that I'm making Abraham rich.

24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

*Preserve what the young men ate, along with the share of the men who went with me - Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre - they should keep their portion.
