Chapter 11

1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
*Everyone on Earth spoke the same language.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
*As they traveled from the east, they discovered a flat area in the land of Shinar and decided to live there.
3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
*They told each other, "Let's make bricks and bake them well." So, they used bricks instead of stones and slime as mortar.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
*They said, "Let's build a city and a tower that reaches close to the sky. This way, we can have a famous name so we don't get spread out all over the world."
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
*And God looked at the city and the tall building people made.
6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
*And God said, Look, the people are united, and they speak the same language. They start doing things together. Now, there is nothing they can't do that they've thought of.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
*Let's go and mix up their languages so they can't understand each other.
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
*So, God spread them far away from there across the whole Earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
*So, they named it Babel because God mixed up everyone's language there. Then God spread the people all over the world in different places.
10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:
*Shem had children at 100 years old. He had a son named Arphaxad two years after a big flood.
11 And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
*After having Arphaxad, Shem lived for 500 more years and had more children.
12 And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:
*Arphaxad lived for 53 years before having a son named Salah.
13 And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
*After having Salah, Arphaxad lived for 430 more years and had children.
14 And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:
*Salah lived for 30 years before having a child named Eber.
15 And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
*Salah lived for 403 years after having Eber and had more children besides Eber.
16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:
*Eber lived for 43 years and then had a child named Peleg.
17 And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
*Eber had children with Peleg being the first, then lived for 430 more years, also having other kids.
18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:
*Peleg lived for 30 years before having a son named Reu.
19 And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
*Peleg lived for 209 years after having his son Reu, and during that time he also had other children.
20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:
*Reu lived for 25 years and had a son named Serug.
21 And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
*Reu lived for 207 years after having Serug, during which time he also had children.
22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:
*Serug lived for 30 years before having a son named Nahor.
23 And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
*Serug lived for 200 more years after having Nahor, during which time he had children.
24 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:
*Nahor lived for 92 years and had a son named Terah.
25 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
*Nahor lived for 119 years after having Terah, and during that time he had children and grandchildren.
26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
*Terah lived for 70 years and then had three sons: Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
*This is about Terah's descendants: Terah had three children - Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Then Haran had a child named Lot.
28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
*Haran passed away before his dad Terah in the place where he was born, which is Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
*Abram and Nahor married women. Abram's wife was named Sarai, while Nahor's wife was called Milcah. Milcah was Haran's daughter, and Haran was also the father of Iscah.
30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
*However, Sarai could not have children; she was unable to give birth.
31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
*Terah brought his son Abram, Lot (Haran's son), and Sarai (Abram's wife), and they left Ur of the Chaldees to go to Canaan. They went to Haran and lived there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
*Terah lived for 205 years, and he passed away in the city of Haran.
