Chapter 15

1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

*After this, God spoke to Abram in a dream, saying, Don't be afraid, Abram. I am your protection, and your enormous reward.

2 And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

*Abram asked God, "What will you give me since I have no children and my household manager is a man named Eliezer from Damascus?"

3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

*Abram said, "You haven't given me any children, but someone born in my household is my heir."

4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

*And suddenly, the Lord spoke to him, saying, This person will not be your heir. Instead, it will be someone born from your body who will be your heir.

5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

*He took him outside and said, Look at the sky and count the stars, if you can. He told him, Your children will be as numerous as the stars.

6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

*He trusted in God, and God considered this as making him innocent.

7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

*He said, "I am the Lord who took you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess it."

8 And he said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

*He asked, "Lord God, how can I be sure that I will have it?"

9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

*He asked for a three-year-old female cow, a three-year-old female goat, a male sheep of three years old, a turtledove, and a baby pigeon.

10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

*He gathered everyone and split them in half, placing each part next to the other, except for the birds, which he didn't divide.

11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

*When birds landed on the dead bodies, Abraham made them leave.

12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

*As the sun set, Abram became very sleepy. Suddenly, he was overwhelmed by a terrible dark feeling.

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

*He told Abram, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, under the control of others. They will suffer and be mistreated for 400 years."

14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

*I will judge the nation serving them later, and then they'll leave with much wealth.

15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

*You will go to your ancestors peacefully; you will be buried after living a long, good life.

16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

*But in the fourth generation, they will return here: the sin of the Amorites is not yet complete.

17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

*One day, as the sun set and darkness came, a smoky furnace and a lit lamp appeared between the divided pieces.

18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

*On that very day, God made a promise to Abraham, telling him that he gave the land to his descendants from the Egyptian river to the big river, the Euphrates.

19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,

*The Kenites, the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites.

20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,

*And the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Rephaims.

21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

*And the Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.
